Last night, Robert Icke's Almeida production of Shakespeare's Hamletopened at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End. Read our review here.

The production stars Andrew Scott in the title role, and the cast also features Juliet Stevenson, Jessica Brown Findlay, Angus Wright, David Rintoul and Luke Thompson.

Celebrity guests on opening night included Scott's Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, and Brown Findlay's Downton Abbey castmates Sophie McShera and Laura Carmichael, as well as Tobias Menzies, Harry Lloyd, Lia Williams and Tamara Rojo.

Dickens draws the most remarkable characters, there are few writers with whom we remember their characters above all else, but I think he is one of them. From Fagin to the Artful Dodger, Marley to Scrooge, Wilkins Micawber to Uriah Heep, he has created some of the most famous characters in literary history. What a privilege it has been to bring some of these characters to life on stage in David Copperfield.
