EDINBURGH 2022: Richard Stott Q&A

BWW catches up with Richard Stott to chat about bringing Afterparty to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Afterparty.

Afterparty is essentially a take on growing up and how it may have become either harder or less natural for some. I was at a dinner party with some close friends last year and couldn't help realising what different speeds we're all progressing in life despite being the same age. The show focuses on the period where I am now, which is my mid 30s, it never occurred to me what a confusing period of life this was going to be. The title come from the idea that your mid 30s can feel like an afterparty in that, your friends are leaving the party, you aren't ready to move on yet but you can't stay forever.

Having performed at the Fringe before do you think you know what to expect from the festival?

This is my third show and second hour, my last outing was 2019 where I had a wonderful time, came 2nd in Dave's Top Jokes 2019, future was bright and then bam the pandemic happened. I've got no expectations of the festival other than it to be a real celebration of it being back properly. I just make people laugh and drink wheat beer in beer gardens.

Who would you like to come and see it?

Of course with the show discussing the trials of you mid 30s I'd love people that age to come but the show is funny for everyone, whether you've passed through it or have it coming up it's all-relatable. Comedy fans who enjoy an anecdotal style would love this show

Where might we have seen you before?

Apart from my previous shows, I've been gigging regularly at comedy clubs and theatres across the country. My special is live on Next Up Comedy and you may have heard my jokes on BBC Radio 4 News Quiz... oh yes I've been on TV too, I appeared on ITV2's Stand up Sketch Show this year. I also organised a big comedy fundraiser for Doctors Of The World and their work in the Ukraine war, that was streamed out all over the world, if you watched that, thank you for your donation.

What would you like audiences to take away from it?

I just want people to find it funny. I'm not coming at this show with a huge message, we've had a hell of a two years so the aim here in entertainment and fun. I want people to be thoroughly entertained and if they take some inspiration from it, lovely... but I'd like to make them laugh first.
