EDINBURGH 2022: Ania Magliano Q&A

BWW catches up with Ania Magliano to chat about bringing Absolutely No Worries If Not to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about your show Absolutely No Worries If Not

It's my first hour of stand up, so it covers the important things in my life: my heritage, my sexuality and when I bought a cat off Gumtree. It's about coming to terms with who I am, but in a fun way. Whilst it's told from my perspective (a 24 year old bisexual who went to an all girls school), I hope it's a show that anyone can enjoy regardless of their identity.

Where might we have seen you before?

I write for Amelia Dimoldenberg's Youtube series Chicken Shop Date, which has featured up and coming indie musicians such as Ed SHeeran and Charli XCX. I've been on ITV2's Stand Up Sketch Show, and I've also had a few TikToks go viral, including one called 'What your email signature says about you'. That now basically means I can't sign off an email without it being quoted back to me.

When did you start creating online content?

I used to post regularly to my Youtube channel from when I was 15 up until I was 17. Whilst other kids were out partying and drinking booze, I was at home using iMovie to edit vlogs. Pretty cool stuff. When I got to sixth form and started to make friends I stopped posting Youtube videos, but during lockdown I (like so many of us) got drawn into TikTok, which I now have a deeply complicated and toxic relationship with.

Tell us a bit about your podcast The Weekly Shop

It's a podcast I cohost with my friend Harry Monaghan which is essentially an ode to the humble supermarket. We made it to prove the people who say 'there's a podcast for everything these days' right. Every week a guest takes us through their shopping basket, which allows us a glimpse into their soul. As well as their regular purchases, they get to ban one item from supermarkets forever and tell us about their ghosts of baskets paskets (things they don't buy anymore). It really is as stupid as it sounds, but you'd be surprised how many people have incredibly strong opinions on apple variety and processed ham. For the record - Pink Lady apples are number one and if you disagree you are wrong in the head.

What are you most excited about seeing at the festival?

There are so many shows I can't wait to see. I was a massive fan of comedy before I started performing so I'll definitely be trying to watch as many shows as possible. More than that, I'm deeply, deeply excited to see the glowing exterior of the Palmyra kebab shop on Nicolson St. Best falafel wrap I've had in my entire life, and I've thought about it every day since I left Edinburgh in 2019.
