Whoopi Goldberg to Emcee Dalai Lama Event, 7/9

Whoopi Goldberg will be the emcee for the Dalai Lama's World Peace Event this Saturday, July 9th. The Dalai Lama will give a speech entitled 'A Talk for World Peace.' The event is free and open to the public.

On her Facebook page, Goldberg stated that "This Saturday, I am emceeing a historic public world peace event being held by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the U.S. Capitol (West Lawn) in Washington, D.C. After the Dalai Lama's address I will have the opportunity to ask him a few questions on behalf of the public. If there is something you would like me to ask go to worldpeace@kalachakra2011.com to submit your question. Submit by Friday at 5:00 PM (EST)."

The Dalai Lama will be in Washington July 6 to 16, according to USA Today.

Currently a host on 'The View,' Goldberg made her film debut in The Color Purple (1985) playing Celie, a mistreated black woman in the Deep South. She received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won her first Golden Globe Award for her role in the film.

In 1990, she starred as Oda Mae Brown, a psychic helping a slain man (Patrick Swayze) find his killer in the blockbuster film Ghost. This performance won her a second Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In addition, Goldberg has a British Academy Film Award, four People's Choice Awards and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is one of the few entertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award.

She has starred onn Broadway in two solo shows, XANADU, Ma Rainey'S BLACK BOTTOM and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. She recently starred as 'Mother Superior' in the West End production of SISTER ACT, and is producing the show on Broadway.
