Signature Theatre to Launch 'Sigworks: Monday Night New Play Readings' This Fall

By:

This season the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre continues its commitment to new work by launching the SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Readings, a new initiative to highlight and support the work of DMV and regional playwrights. This series is an opportunity for playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and patrons to explore new plays in a fun and informal environment.

The Monday Night New Play Reading Series will be hosted at Ali's Bar in Signature Theatre's Mead Lobby on the first Monday of every other month beginning October 5th, 2015 and going through August 2016 (see full schedule of dates below). Ali's Bar will be open before and after each reading and audience members are invited to come early for drink specials.

Signature Theatre Director of New Works Joe Calarco stated, "The DMV area has one of the richest theater communities in this country. One of the first things Signature Theatre Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer and I talked about when I took the position as Director of New Works was that not only did we want to give local writers a place to hear how audiences react to their work, but we really wanted to create a gathering place for all local theater artists to come and support each other's new work as well as socialize. The Monday Night New Play Reading Series is that opportunity.?"

Signature Theatre is accepting submissions for full-length plays (no musicals) from July 21st through August 23rd, 2015. Interested playwrights should submit the following materials to submissions@sigtheatre.org

· Please submit full scripts with a clear cast/character breakdown

· Synopsis

· Name, address, phone number and email address

Playwrights whose scripts are selected will have the opportunity to rehearse their plays with professional actors the day of the reading. Joe Calarco will serve as dramaturg for all readings.

SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Readings schedule is:

October 5, 2015 at 7:00 PM

December 7, 2015 at 7:00 PM

February 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM
