STG Announces STG's Nights at the Neptune: A People's Theatre Joint

By:

The Seattle Theatre Group (STG), the non-profit arts operators of three historic Seattle theatres (Paramount, Moore and Neptune) has announced a new initiative presented with support from the Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods, STG's Nights at the Neptune: A People's Theatre Joint.

Nights at the Neptune makes The Neptune Theatre in the University District of Seattle, available, free of charge to artists and community organizations to create and perform a public arts event of their own design. Eight projects will be selected in the spring and then presented during the summer of 2013, and offered at no charge to the public.

With this initiative, STG will professionally staff The Neptune Theatre eight times per year, with two days of access: one for rehearsal and one for presentation, provide basic staffing and technical crew, basic lighting and sound equipment, as well as provide public relations and marketing support. The content will be the responsibility of the artists, but the program will emphasize access for artists and organizations concerned with issues of race, social justice, marginalized populations, and/or youth.

"Nights and the Neptune is designed to empower underrepresented artists and communities, " said Vivian Phillips, STG's Marketing and Communications Director. "We believe this program will increase access to the theatre for groups and individuals to bring to life some of our community's artistic innovation and addressing relevant issues, which otherwise wouldn't have a place to showcase," she added.

Participation will require a proposal to be presented to a steering committee, made up of University District and Greater Seattle-based business owners, non-profit organization leaders, as well as music and arts tastemakers and leaders. The criteria for participation by artists and organizations include:
Locality (Seattle)
Artistic significance of the project and/or emerging approach to the arts
Capacity to complete the presentation
The artists' underserved access to facilities
Ability to measurably increase activity in the neighborhood
Inclusion of issues relating to race, social justice, marginalized populations, and/or youth
Ability to respond nimbly to opportunities
All interested parties must submit a proposal of no more than three pages maximum to: natn-submission@stgpresents.org (electronic submissions preferred) or mail one copy to:
