Nilaja Sun Returns to the Woolly Stage Since 2008's Critical Ht NO CHILD…WITH PIKE ST.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company announces the next production of its 37th Season, Pike St. by playwright Nilaja Sun, directed by Ron Russell. Pike St. will run from March 27-April 23, 2017.

From the one-woman dynamo who brought the Obie-Award-winning No Child... to Woolly in 2008 comes a rich slice of Puerto Rican immigrant life that "glows with humor" (New York Times). If you've ever seen Nilaja Sun's virtuosic performance style, you'll want to experience it again... and if you haven't, you must not miss the chance to be transported to Pike St.

On the Lower East Side, a mother works hard to keep the electricity flowing for her daughter's respirator while a hurricane looms nearby. As she prepares for disaster, a vibrant host of characters-a decorated war veteran, her ne'er-do-well father, and her octogenarIan Downstairs neighbor-bring new meaning to the phrase "it takes a village."

"Nilaja's work is grounded fundamentally in social change that sparks meaningful and necessary conversation," says Woolly Mammoth Artistic Director Howard Shalwitz. "Her masterful artistry through storytelling is not only a thrilling theatrical experience, but also a powerful vehicle, giving voices to underrepresented characters and communities. Pike St. is no exception. We couldn't be more excited to welcome her back to the Woolly stage."

Nilaja Sun returns to Woolly after her successful run with No Child...(2008), which was directed by Hal Brooks. Her relationship with Woolly has continued since that production. Working as a teaching artist, she has held multiple mini-residencies at area colleges and universities. Her awards include: Obie, Helen Hayes, Lucille Lortel, Theater World Award, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards. Pike St., which was originally commissioned by Epic, had its world premiere at the Abrons Arts Center in New York City. A native of the Lower East Side, Sun is a Princess Grace Award winner and has worked as a teaching artist for more than 15 years.

Ron Russel, co-founder and Executive Director of New York City's Epic Theatre Ensemble, is the director and sound designer for Pike St. Megham Raham (set design), Clint Ramos (costume design), and Tyler Micoleau (lighting design) round out the production team.

Patrons who are 30-years-old and younger may, at any time, purchase Section B tickets for $20 to any performance.
