Jennifer Hudson Joins Dylan, Legend, Latifah et al. for White House Concert in Celebration of Black History Month, 2/11

By:

Jennifer Hudson is the latest performer to join the White House's first music event of 2010, a concert entitled "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement" in honor of Black History Month in the State Dining Room.  The concert is scheduled for February 11. Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah are set to host.

Previously announced performers include Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Howard University Choir.

Songs featured will be associated with the civil rights movement. There will be readings from famous civil rights speeches, as well.

The White House music series was started last year by Michelle Obama. The concert will be broadcast on public television and streamed live online at whitehouse.gov.

A one-time American Idol finalist, Jennifer Hudson rose to fame quickly after her winning performance as Effie in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls.  She has since gone onto star in Sex and the City: The Movie, The Secret Life of Bees and Fragments.  She will next appear on screen in 2011 in a biopic, Winnie, about Winnie Mandela.
