The Ford's Theatre Society announced that the cast of the 2011 production of "A Christmas Carol" is partnering with Miriam's Kitchen to create a donation drive inspired by the themes of charity in Dickens's holiday classic. During the curtain calls for performances of "A Christmas Carol", the cast will collect monetary donations on behalf of the Washington-based non-profit Miriam's Kitchen. Patrons can also make donations through the Ford's Theatre Box Office. All donation checks should be made payable to "Miriam's Kitchen." "A Christmas Carol" plays at Ford's Theatre November 18 though December 31, 2011.

This is the third year that Ford's Theatre has partnered with a local non-profit during its run of "A Christmas Carol." In 2010, Ford's Theatre partnered with So Others Might Eat (SOME), raising more than $77,000, which helped SOME sustain their efforts to feed, clothe and provide job training for thousands in need within Washington. In 2009, Ford's Theatre partnered with Bread for the City and raised funds to help the organization to provide 1,846 meals for D.C. families.

"Each winter, the story of ‘A Christmas Carol' renews in us, as it does in Scrooge, a compassionate and generous heart," said Director of Ford's Theatre Society Paul R. Tetreault. "In selecting Miriam's Kitchen as recipients of this year's donation drive, the cast of ‘A Christmas Carol' and our audiences can help make a difference in the lives of thousands in the D.C.-area struggling with hunger and homelessness."

"We cannot thoroughly express our gratitude to the Ford's Theatre cast, crew, management and patrons for their generosity," said Miriam's Kitchen's Executive Director Scott Schenkelberg. "Miriam's Kitchen's homeless guests are the same people staying on the streets that you may have passed on the way to the theatre. It is wonderful that this year's donations will go to serve them."

Miriam's Kitchen
For nearly 30 years, Miriam's Kitchen has served as a critical resource for the nearly 12,000 homeless individuals in Washington, D.C., by offering healthy meals and comprehensive case management services in a comfortable environment. Miriam's Kitchen builds relationships with many individuals who might not otherwise seek support. The organization provides mental health and medical care, legal assistance and substance abuse services, employment resources and housing options for some of the region's most vulnerable men and women. In 2011 alone, they served more than 4,000 homeless guests.
