Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony To Perform All-American Concert 'Coast To Coast!' At Strathmore Arts Center

The Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony (AYWS), the premier honor wind ensemble for high school youth in the Atlanta metropolitan area, will perform a special concert on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md. Under the direction of conductor and music director Scott Stewart, the AYWS will perform an exciting, all-American concert with an innovative program celebrating iconic composers from across the U.S. Coast to Coast! features a tribute to the legacy of Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his birth centenary, a special in-memoriam performance of David Maslanka's California, and more. Lieutenant Colonel Jason Fettig, Commander of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, will also join the ensemble as a special guest performer.

Now in its 29th season, the AYWS is comprised of approximately 85 students in grades 9-12 who share a commitment to excellence in musical performance. It is one of the most visible ambassadors of culture and youth performance for the city of Atlanta and state of Georgia. The AYWS has appeared on Public Radio International's acclaimed radio program "From the Top" with pianist Christopher O'Riley and has performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, CA), Carnegie Hall (New York, NY), the New World Center (Miami Beach, FL) and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (New York, NY). The ensemble also frequently performs commissioned compositions, as well as world and regional premieres, and partners regularly with guest composers, soloists, and conductors of national renown.

Music Director and Conductor Scott Stewart is on the instrumental music faculty at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Ga. He served as the Director of Wind Studies at Emory University from 1999-2013, where he conducted the Emory Wind Ensemble and taught courses in conducting, wind band literature and history, and film music.
