It's an international phenomenon. Across the world people are packing movie theaters not only to watch The Sound of Music but to actively participate. The result is a wild and wonderful night in the theater.

Audiences are encouraged to sing along, and they do, with great gusto. The lyrics of each song are projected onto the screen, so everyone can join in. The villains are hissed, and the good guys are cheered.

Costumes are encouraged as well. Expect nuns, soldiers and Austrian garb, but also more creative efforts like sheep and even the Alps. People have been known to arrive covered head to toe in craft paper and twine, done up as - what else? - "brown paper packages tied up with strings."

The showing is a crazy kick-off to the big event of the fall season, the Middlebury Community Players' grand production of The Sound of Music, which opens at Town Hall Theater on April 22. Sing-Along Sound of Music will benefit the Middlebury Community Players and Town Hall Theater. A $5 donation is suggested at the door.  Saturday, April 17. Two showings: 7 pm and 11 pm.
