Patty Smith's exploration of love treads a very fine line between tragedy and comedy. Her new one-person show, Fool for Love, debuts at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater tonight, August 15.

Smith, a local teacher, choreographer and dancer, performs regularly at Town Hall Theater. She delighted audiences not long ago with Schmaltz, a solo evening that explored vintage music and dance styles. Last year's Animal Dances was a loving and very personal look at the plight of animals on this planet.

In Fool for Love, Smith's examines love in all of its facets: Dream Love; Lost love; Pure love; Love for people and places and things. Her dances create an evening of moving personal stories, danced to an eclectic score that runs from Enrico Caruso to Janis Joplin. As Smith's dances are invariably brave and completely honest, the evening contains adult material.

"Patty's summer concerts are always a high-point of the THT summer," says THT executive director Douglas Anderson. "They're always surprising, always moving, and they always incorporate her sly sense of humor. Her concerts take audiences on a rich emotional journey."

Fool for Love can be seen at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on one night only, Friday, August 15, at 8 pm. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-222, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat, noon-5 pm) and at the door.
