Renowned Choreographer Peter Chu Launches Into Creative Residency at The Cultch
Critically acclaimed choreographer and chuthis. Artistic Director Peter Chu returns to Vancouver for an artistic residency at The Cultch, July 2 to 12, 2014. Chu will begin creation on an original full-length work - a solo project inspired by Las Vegas lounge acts of the 1960's, which will enjoy its US premiere in Las Vegas in 2015.
"I'm absolutely thrilled that The Cultch has opened their doors to allow me the space, time, and creative freedom to dig deep into this new solo work," says Chu. "This latest creation draws largely on the attitudes and passions of performers from old Las Vegas coupled with the famous venues that have a rich history of presenting these iconic artists - intimate spaces very similar to The Cultch's Historic Theatre. I can't think of a better place to begin this journey."
This newest solo project, choreographed and danced by Chu, will reach deep into themes of doubt and explore perceptions of reality, showcasing the highs and lows that come with a life in the spotlight. Chu will incorporate lighting, sound, and sophisticated multimedia elements to pull back the curtain on celebrity, exposing the audience to the, oftentimes, unforgiving misconceptions of what it means to be an entertainer, and the glorification of false idols.Founded in 2008, chuthis. is a project-based contemporary dance company that showcases the work of Artistic Director Peter Chu and his esteemed collaborators. Based in Las Vegas, chuthis. company members are among the industry's most talented and sought after dancers, performing with such luminary artists and ensembles as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Robert Lepage, The Rockettes, and Cirque du Soleil, among many others. The critically acclaimed premiere work from chuthis., Nothing Sticks, performed to enthusiastic audiences in Vancouver and New York City. Most recently, chuthis. was featured as a 2014 Emerging Principal Company for the prestigious Springboard Danse Montréal.
