MovEnt to Present SMALL STAGE POINT 5, 2/12-15

By:

Back for another round of knock-out collaborations, Vancouver's hottest music and dance series celebrates its third iteration of delightfully unexpected performances; MovEnt presents Small Stage point 5 - the valentine's edition (cheeky kid sister to Dances for a Small Stage) at retro-glam Vancouver locale The Emerald, February 12 - 15, 2015 at 8pm. With a winning formula that pairs five illustrious local musicians with five renowned Vancouver dancers, this Valentine's-themed evening will feature an exciting line-up of diverse artistic styles, to include both new artists and returning favourites.

"Small Stage point 5 is all about experimentation, pairing creative minds from the realms of music and dance - two genres that fit together so seamlessly - to see what type of wild, inventive creations can develop," explains MovEnt Artistic Producer Julie-anne Saroyan. "For this Valentine's Day edition, we've assembled our most diverse line-up yet - artists who are masters of their trade, who are furthering the evolution of their respective styles. We can't wait to see what the resulting creations will entail."

Emceed by Billy Marchenski as the comically inappropriate "Cupid," Small Stage point 5 - the valentine's edition will feature artistic styles including burlesque, Indian and Chinese dance, waaking, contemporary, Asian-infused electronica, singer-songwriter, rock, and pop. These eclectic pairs have only a few weeks to team up to create an original, imaginative five to seven minute work. Musician, mover pairings include:?

  • Tariq Hussain, co-curator, Juno nominated songwriter, and Brasstronaut member, with Chengxin Wei, feted dancer with Ballet BC for six seasons, trained in classical Chinese dance;
  • Tarun 'Tspoon' Nayar, electronica DJ/producer, tabla player, and Delhi 2 Dublin member, and Scheherazaad Cooper, Canadian Odissi classical Indian dancer whose latest work, BackStories, was recently presented at London's Sadler's Wells Theatre;
  • Mark Andrew Hamilton, Saatchi Gallery Music Prize recipient, Polaris Music Prize nominee, and member of Woodpigeon, with Clarence Tang, award-winning waaking and street dance artist;
  • Louise Burns, Polaris Music Prize and SOCAN Songwriting Prize nominated singer-songwriter and Burgundy Brixx, Vancouver's internationally renowned queen of burlesque and producer of the wildly successful Kitty Nights Burlesque;
  • Andrea Lo, lead singer of Vancouver's hypnotic Dark-Pop group The Belle Game, with in-demand contemporary dance artist Karissa Barry who has worked with Wen Wei Wang, Amber Funk Barton, Joe Ink, and more.

This performance will once again be staged in The Emerald's main dining area, a 172-seat restaurant, cabaret room, lounge, and bar on Gore Street. Decked out in ornate crystal chandeliers and mid-century furnishings, this Vancouver setting evokes the spirit of old Las Vegas, including a dash of "anything goes" attitude.

MovEnt and The Emerald will also offer dinner + show packages of Vegas-inspired cuisine, in addition to performance-only tickets.
