Step into the dark woods this October for a deliciously chilling 60-minute production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s classic opera, Hansel and Gretel, sung in English.
Lost in a mysterious forest, two brave siblings must outsmart a sinister Witch to find their way home. Packed with eerie enchantment, lush harmonies, and dramatic twists, this spooky, family-friendly opera brings a timeless fairytale to life for audiences of all ages.
Directed by William Byram, this adaptation features a stellar cast alongside talented students from BWA Performing Arts. Rozanna Madylus (Regents Opera, ENO) stars as the adventurous Hansel, paired with Anna Gregg (Royal Opera, Longhope) as his clever sister Gretel. Mae Heydorn (Glyndebourne, Regents Opera) takes on the remarkable triple role as the Mother, the soothing Sandman, and the terrifying Witch.
Under the musical direction of Adam Dickson and featuring striking visual design by costume designer Jackie Crier, this haunting production offers an unforgettable operatic experience at The Cockpit.
Though we admit that venturing as far as saying that the witch looks like a mix of Margaret Thatcher and the old Queen might be just us being fastidious with our interpretative vein, the links are there to see and analyse. Yes, it’s a bit cheesy and adults playing children is always slightly jarring, but it’s also a prime example of how we can navigate world politics with your kids.
