West End Adaptation of '1984' Tours to Citizens Theatre, Now thru Sept 6

By:

The West End smash hit adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece 1984 begins its UK tour at the Citizens Theatre opening tonight, 29 August and running until Saturday 6 September

Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan's critically acclaimed adaptation, which garnered five-star reviews across the board before transferring to London's West End for a highly successful run, will play to Scottish audiences for the first time as it embarks on its second UK tour in a co-production with Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre. The performances at the Citizens Theatre are the only Scottish dates included on the tour and mark a return for the company which presented The Seagull at the Citizens in 2013.

George Orwell's 1984, published in 1949, is one of the most influential novels in recent history, with its chilling depiction of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control. Its ideas have become our ideas, and Orwell's fiction is often said to be our reality.

Filtering the spirit and the ambition of the novel through the lens of contemporary culture, this radical new staging explores surveillance culture, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying.

Headlong's recent productions, which typically interrogate important cultural texts, include The Effect with Billie Piper, American Psycho with Matt Smith and Chimerica, which won Best New Play at the 2014 Olivier Awards. The company are regular visitors to the Citizens stage, with previous co-productions including Medea, and Angels in America, as well as recent touring productions The Seagull and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

1984 is one of Headlong's most acclaimed and commercially successful tours in recent history, having had its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in September 2013. Nominated for an Olivier award in the Best New Play category, the play performed a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, before transferring to the West End's Playhouse Theatre where it continued to receive critical acclaim whilst also being a commercial success with the West End run, recouping after 10 weeks.

Tickets for performances at Citizens Theatre are £8.50 - £20.50 and are available from citz.co.uk / 0141 429 0022.
