Photo Exclusive: Shobana Jeyasingh Brings BAYADERE: THE NINTH LIFE to Sadler Wells

In her new version of Bayadère - The Ninth Life, Shobana Jeyasingh casts a cool eye over the excesses of Marius Petipa's 19th century classic, searching for the roots of the exotic temple dancer and the allure she has exerted in Europe over the centuries.

This 2017 edit has a bold new design by the award-winning Tom Piper, co-creator of the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red poppy installation at the Tower of London. Together he and Jeyasingh undercut the narcotic sensuality of the Victorian vision of the bayadère.

The ten exceptional dancers include Avatâra Ayuso, Noora Kela and Sooraj Subramaniam as the bayadère.
