University Women in the Arts has announced that Kate Bryan, presenter of Sky Arts' Portrait Artist of The Year and Landscape Artist of the Year, Head of Collections at Soho House and former Director of The Fine Art Society, will be a speaker at their major International Women's Day event.

Open to female arts students and recent graduate at universities across the UK, the major event will offer advice for women wanting to work in the arts.

Kate Bryan says: "It is not just a pleasure to be part of this special event, but in some senses an obligation. Women must help women. Those starting out in the arts need to believe that they have a value as an individual and that their success is part of a larger framework that depends on women empowering other women to create a balanced landscape."

Director of University Women in the Arts Jennifer Tuckett says: "We are delighted to be working with Kate Bryan on our International Women's Day event. Kate was the winner of the Arts and Culture Women of the Future Award and we are grateful to Kate for passing her experiences and advice on to the next generation of women wanting to work in the arts - it is by women helping each other and sharing their experiences of how they have navigated their way in the industry that we can help ensure more women making the transition from studying to working in the arts".

Other speakers at the University Women in the Arts event include Pinky Lilani, founder of the Women of the Future Programme, the Women of the Future Awards and Asian Woman of Achievement Awards, Jennifer Tuckett, Director of University Women in the Arts and founder of London Writers' Week and The Student Guide to Writing series and Course Leader of Central Saint Martins' first ever creative writing degree, the MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins, one of the UK's leading scriptwriting courses, amongst other leading women.

University Women in the Arts is running in partnership with the Women of the Future Programme, the MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins, Writers at Work Productions, and in association with Tonic Theatre.

The scheme is inspired by the fact that many more women study the arts in the UK (for example over 70% of students at the University of the Arts London, Europe's largest arts University, are female) but less women work in the arts, particularly in artistic and leadership roles. According to recent British Theatre Consortium figures, only 30% of professional playwrights are women and according to recent UAL figures, only 30% of professional artists in galleries in London are female.

Other University Women in the Arts mentors include Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, Jude Kelly, founder of the WOW Festivals and Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre, Joanna Prior, Managing Director of Penguin Books, Charlotte Higgins, Chief Culture Writer at The Guardian, Elizabeth Freestone, Artistic Director of Pentabus Theatre Company, Tanya Seghatchian, film producer, Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of The Royal Court Theatre, and historian, columnist and presenter Amanda Foreman.

University Women is also currently running a mentoring competition for women who want to run arts businesses, with fashion company TOAST - five students will receive six months mentoring from the company and the competition can be applied for here: https://universitywomeninthearts.wufoo.com/forms/z5rfh0r18gfqq3/
