Birmingham Hippodrome is delighted to present the extraordinary and exciting performance company Transe Express, masters of the public spectacle, who will perform Maudits Sonnants a large-scale outdoor production in Birmingham for the very first time on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September.

Maudits Sonnants is an exhilarating, adrenaline-inducing, awe-inspiring production which will be performed for FREE in the city's Centenary Square. Maudits Sonnants features actors, trapeze artists, acrobats, bell ringers, dancers, percussionists, singers, string quartets, welders, technicians and forgers with bewitching performances played against the night sky.

The award-winning Maudits Sonnants has at its centre a lotus like metallic structure of 17 meters diameter manipulated by a telescopic crane. It is lifted high into the air carrying with it musicians and trapeze artists. As it slowly spins the sound of bells ring out across the city.

Since 1982 Transe Express, based in France, have travelled around the world, utilising public urban areas to create art while engaging people in open spaces and creating an environment of play and enjoyment. The company have performed in cities including Singapore, Sydney and Barcelona and at major public events.

Birmingham Hippodrome is fast growing a reputation for presenting world class outdoor performances. In 2012 it presented The Voyage, a collaboration with Motion House and Australia's Legs on the Wall, which featured a large scale boat in Victoria Square, acrobatics and dance, marking the launch of the London 2012 Festival. In 2013, as part of 4 Squares Weekender to celebrate the opening of Library of Birmingham, the theatre presented As the World Tipped which combined dramatic film and visuals with breath-taking aerial performance and stunning choreography. And in 2014 the theatre helped the city commemorate the start of WW1 by presenting Minimum Monument by Brazilian artist Néle Azevedo. It featured a phenomenal 5,000 handmade ice sculptures, attracted thousands of people from all over the UK and made world-wide news.

Maudits Sonnants will receive its Birmingham premiere in Centenary Square on Friday 25 September and will continue on Saturday 26 September. Both performances start at 8.30pm. The event is FREE.

Maudits Sonnants is one of the main highlights of Birmingham Weekender, Birmingham's largest arts festival, and features an awe-inspiring programme of events from hundreds of world-class West Midlands and international artists and companies.

Birmingham Weekender is produced by Birmingham Hippodrome on behalf of Birmingham Arts Partnership and supports the opening of the newly transformed New Street Station and coincides with the Rugby World Cup and Style Birmingham Live.
