The Pollard Theatre Celebrates 25 Seasons of Legacy

By: Aug. 24, 2011

The Pollard Theatre invites the public to help celebrate its 25 Seasons of Legacy. In keeping with its tradition of producing a diverse theatrical offering for Oklahoma audiences, the Pollard's 25th Season line-up includes an unfinished mystery, a bubbly blonde lawyer and the return to the lovely "ladies" of St. Tropez as a few of the treats in store for Pollard audiences in this historic season. The 25th season concludes a three season arc showcasing love, laughter and legacy.

Year after year, the Pollard has brought unique shows to Guthrie by enlisting talent from all across the country. Each of the six major productions the theatre produces every year is centered on the goal of challenging both the artists and their audiences while telling stories that illuminate the shared human experience.

"In today's economic and political climate, producing for 25 years at the regional level is a significant mile stone for any theatre company. This celebration is truly a testament to the Pollard Company and the Guthrie Arts and Humanities Council as well as the extraordinary commitment of the Pollard patron," explained Liz Sterkel, President of the Guthrie Arts and Humanities Council. "

The Pollard's prestigious history began in 1987 when the Guthrie Arts and Humanities Council formed, but the site of the theatre has been around since the Land Run in 1889. The combination of the historic Pollard building against the company's modern performances creates a unique venue for viewing theatre.

"The commitment to excellence this company has is outstanding," Sterkle said. "Ever since this group was formed they have been setting the standard for quality theatre in Oklahoma."

The Pollard's original company was formed after hundred of hopefuls auditioned, and only 17 made the cut. Today's company is made up of 7 resident company members, 2 support staff members and a host of talented Oklahomans serving as guest artists throughout the season. In turn, these company members and guest artists feel a special duty to honor what the theatre has accomplished, and vow to translate that prestige into future successes.

"When the Pollard formed many people didn't know if it would survive," Don Coffin, a founding member of the board explained. "Not only did we survive, we have thrived. Now we have 25 years of success in our past, and we expect 25 more years."
