Toronto Youth Theatre's SPRING AWAKENING Opens 11/16
From November 16th to November 26th Toronto theatre goers will be able to see the multiple Tony winning musical ‘Spring Awakening' performed for the first time by actors the same age as the characters in the play. This production, at the Lower Ossington Theatre, marks the first time the rights for the musical have been granted to a youth theatre company.
Winner of 8 Tony Awards in 2007, the musical ‘Spring Awakening' is based on the 1892 German play of the same name. As highly controversial today as it was in the 19th century, Spring Awakening examines the sexual awakening of teenagers as they discover who they really are. Originally banned in German for its portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, child abuse and suicide, Spring Awakening is as relevant today as it ever was.
The show features a terrific book, fantastic alternative rock music and songs that will touch the heart. Directed by Neil Silcox, Artistic Director of Toronto Youth theatre and featuring some of the most talented actors in youth theatre, Spring Awakening is an emotional, gripping look into the world of today's teen.
‘Toronto Youth Theatre has always prided itself on handling edgy, adult material not often performed by youth' says Neil, ‘Spring Awakening is a brilliant musical that resonates with kids today as much as the original play did with kids in the 19th century and we are exceedingly proud to have been given the rights to perform it in Toronto.'
Tickets and show schedule are available online by going to the TYT website www.torontoyouththeatre.org, or by calling 416-915-6747 ext 221. Limited tickets at the door, based on availability.
