By: Gabrielle Sierra Nov. 30, 2010
The 2009-2010 MECCA awards presentation ceremony took place Monday November 29, 2010 at Theatre Ste. Catherine, 264 St. Catherine St. E. Hosted by actor Don Anderson, guest presenters included members of the Montreal theatre community, with performances by Dance Animal and spoken word artist Catherine Kidd.
The MECCA awards were initiated in 1998 by Gaetan Charlebois, a local theatre critic. Originally just a widely-distributed media list of Montreal's best English-language live performance achievements over the past season, the MECCAs have grown to encompass a live presentation ceremony. Over the years, participating media have included representatives from CBC, CKUT, Montreal Gazette, The Suburban, Montreal Mirror, Hour Magazine, and others. The MECCAs is the only annual celebration of its kind, and represents the one time that the entire performing community comes together to celebrate excellence in an atmosphere of genuine camaraderie. 2009-10 WinnersBest Production: Haunted Hillbilly (SideMart Theatrical Grocery)Best Actor: Chip Chuipka for A Line in the SandBest Actress: Glenda Braganza for A Line in the SandBest Director: Andrew Shaver for Haunted HillbillyBest Text (tie): Amy Lee Lavoie for Rabbit, Rabbit; Joanna Nutter for My Pregnant BrotherVideos
