Fiona Reid to Star in World Premiere of George F. Walker's THE CHANCE

By:

Fiona Reid to Star in World Premiere of George F. Walker's THE CHANCE ImageLeroy Street Theatre, co-founders of The Assembly Theatre and one of its two resident indie companies, will begin their tenure in Toronto's newest theatre venue with a new play by George F. Walker.

Featuring an all-female cast headed by Canadian theatre superstar Fiona Reid, this world premiere production of THE CHANCE is sure to be one of the most exciting and anticipated indie productions of the theatre season.

Marcie, Jo and Amie are down on their luck. But when a one-night stand leaves a wallet containing a mysterious cheque at their apartment, a wild ride riddled with mob hits, kidnapping schemes, and ham and cheese sandwiches ensues, as these desperate ladies decide to take their chance to bet on success.

Arguably Canada's most popular and prolific playwright, George F. Walker will once again partner with long-time collaborator, director Wes Berger (Parents' Night/The Bigger Issue, Theatre Passe Muraille) to bring this contemporary caper to Parkdale's newest artistic hub.

This world premiere production will feature a cast led by Canadian powerhouse Fiona Reid, fresh from her triumphant run as Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience (Mirvish). Reid is thrilled to be joining indie darlings Anne Van Leeuwen (Tough Jews; Dora Award nomination - Outstanding Ensemble; artistic director, The Assembly Theatre) and Claire Burns (The Castle, The Storefront Theatre; artistic director, The Storefront Theatre in this fast-paced, urgent mad-cap comedy. "These women inspire me," she says. "And I've always wanted to be in a George F. Walker play."

Appropriately staged in Parkdale-- one of the last bastions of affordable housing in Toronto-- The Chance takes place in what could be any apartment in one of the high rises on Jameson Avenue. The world of the play will be created by set designer Chris Bretecher (resident designer, Leroy Street Theatre). The Assembly Theatre's resident designer Steve Vargo (Miss, Unit 102) will create the lighting design. The creative team will also include sound design by Tim Lindsay (Othello, Driftwood Theatre), and costumes by newcomer to the Toronto theatre community, Laura Rose.

The world premiere of a new play by one of our nation's most celebrated playwrights, starring a Canadian comedy icon and two artistic pioneers of the Toronto indie theatre community, staged in Toronto's hottest new performance space is sure to make Leroy Street Theatre's production of The Chance a must-see.
