CITADEL THEATRE LAUNCHES WORLD CAFÉ SERIES

October 17, 2018

(EDMONTON) “Cultural Appropriation or Appreciation? The Artist's Dilemma. ” That's the topic of the first Citadel World Café, being held Monday, October 22nd, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Tucker Amphitheatre.

Cultural appropriation is a frequent and controversial topic in the news. It is of particular interest to Indigenous artists in Canada, concerned that their art is being exploited and the spiritual context of that art desecrated.

Those careless or insensitive about cultural appropriation have sometimes seen a strong negative reaction to their projects.

Edmonton artists and members of the public are invited to attend this inaugural Citadel World Café, an opportunity to share views in a respectful and safe environment.

Among those who have agreed to share their experience are Lana Whiskeyjack, a multidisciplinary artist from Saddle Lake Cree Nation; renowned author Rudy Wiebe, who wrote a pioneering work about a 19th century Cree leader in The Temptations of Big Bear; Anna Marie Sewell, Edmonton's 4th Poet Laureate and an artist of Mi'kmaq, Anishnabe, and Polish heritage; Scott Rollans, a founding member of Juba, a renowned Canadian a capella group known for singing South African freedom songs; Althea Cunningham, an actor, writer, musician and producer who strives to bring positive images and stories to the black diaspora; and Sean Harris Oliver, a Vancouver-based theatre creator/director who creates original Canadian productions.

The Citadel World Café on October 22nd is a co-presentation of the Citadel Theatre and the Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton (PACE).

When is borrowing creative content from a culture and ethnicity other than your own to be considered cultural appropriation?  Does consideration of cultural appropriation limit artistic freedom?  In a multi-cultural society, how do we share ideas and experience among ourselves in a good way?  Bring your own experience and perspective to this dynamic and important conversation.
