Celebrating 19 Years Of Citadel's Production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL

By:

The Citadel Theatre's much beloved production of the Tom Wood adaptation of A Christmas Carol will have its final curtain this December, after a remarkable run of 19 consecutive seasons.

Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Daryl Cloran announced today that the show will have its last run from November 30 to December 23 this year. "We have decided to celebrate our 20th anniversary of A Christmas Carol with a new adaptation and new production, which will premiere at the Citadel in November 2019," said Cloran, adding that more details regarding the new production would be announced in the near future.

According to Citadel executive director Chantell Ghosh, the new production "will have all the charm and Yuletide nostalgia of Dicken's classic with a fresh look, feel and sound; one that will make it as beloved a holiday tradition as its predecessor."

The World Premiere of Tom Wood's Carol adaptation was presented in November 2000, with then-Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker directing. Tom Wood himself played Scrooge and Julien Arnold played Bob Cratchit. Wood went on to play Scrooge for another nine years and returned for one last performance as the old miser in 2016.

The show kept increasing in popularity with Edmontonians throughout its long run, enjoying record box office sales the past two years. The Citadel anticipates that the demand will be unprecedented in this, the production's final year.

Cloran notes that this final production of Wood's adaptation will be the first-ever Citadel production of A Christmas Carol that has an entirely Edmonton-based cast. "It's a great way to celebrate our incredibly talented local artistic community!" Cloran said.

A Christmas Carol runs November 30 to December 23, 2018, at the Citadel Theatre.
