Review: THE BODYGUARD at the Ed Mirvish Theatre

By:

Direct from London's West End is The Bodyguard The Musical making its Canadian premiere featuring the entire West End cast.

The story will, of course, be familiar to fans of the film: Superstar Rachel Marron (Beverley Knight) receives threatening notes from a stalker and must enlist the protection of a reluctant bodyguard. Soon after a romance ensues.

The musical features all the famous Whitney Houston songs from the film, plus additional hits from her vast catalog.

Knight has had a very successful recording career across the pond but might be lesser known to Canadian audiences. She's not Whitney Houston - and she doesn't try to sound like her. She brings her own unique, soulful variations to the hit songs and appears very at home playing a pop star.

Her bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is played by Stuart Reid. Though he's not given very much to do, he makes the most of the material he's got.

The book of the show itself is mostly lackluster - and often times at the performance I attended serious moments (such as the stalker breaking into the home of Mr. Farmer) resulted in laughs.

On the other hand, the show doesn't take itself too seriously and makes for a light hearted and fun night out. Fun production numbers, interesting sets, and a high energy finale brought the opening night audience to their feet.

The principal cast is rounded out by Rachel John, Alex Andreas, Mark Holden, Matthew Stathers, Glen Fox, Charles Hagerty, Neil Ditt, and Jaden Oshenye.

The role of Rachel Marron is alternated on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday matinee performances by Carole Stennett.

Overall The Bodyguard makes for a high energy, fun, and incredibly entertaining night out. Lovers of the Whitney Houston music catalog will feel right at home. Don't miss your chance to experience "The Greatest Love of All" at The Bodyguard.

The Bodyguard is now on stage at the Ed Mirvish Theatre through April 9th. For tickets and more visit Mirvish.com.
