The innovative Art of Time Ensemble today announced the details of the artists and productions featured in their 2013/14 concert series. With music at the centre of the four original programmes curated by Artistic Director Andrew Burashko, the upcoming series brings together theatre, dance, literature and the visual arts with the widest array of musical styles Art of Time has ever assembled in one season.
Featuring the best artistic creators and musicians from Canada and around the world, the Ensemble welcomes saxophone legend Branford Marsalis and Jackie Richardson, who join Peggy Baker, Daniel Brooks, David Earle, Bruce Alcock, Gregory Hoskins, Choir 21, Kevin Lamotte and more."Music is the heartbeat that feeds the various art forms we bring together at Art of Time," said Burashko. "The 2013/14 season is a variety show of the highest order that showcases incredibly talented artists in unique, ambitious and entertaining collaborations that we hope will challenge and inspire our audiences."On stage at the intimate Enwave Theatre, the season opens October 25 to 26, 2013 with What is Sacred, an evening exploring the many forms and styles of music's relation to faith. Featuring Canadian jazz legend Jackie Richardson, Choir 21, Ensemble regular Gregory Hoskins and the stunning choreography of David Earle, the music performed spans centuries. The concert features works from Gregorio Allegri's 17thcentury choral masterpiece Miserere, Arvo Pärt's Sabat Mater, spirituals of the Afro-American church, Oliver Messaien, and contemporary expressions of faith in music by alt-country singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy and Americana artist Steve Earle.
From February 21 to 22, 2014, Electro/Acoustic brings together some of music's most exciting contemporary composers creating pieces for live musicians and prerecorded material, and will feature the choreography of internationally-renowned dance creatorPeggy Baker. The programme includes Steal the Tape, a thrilling work by Jean Pichefor timpani and tape, works by Istvan Marta and Michael Daugharty for string quartet and tape, a new piece by Jonathan Goldsmith that incorporates recordings of chain gang songs from the south, for chamber sextet and tape, and In the Fire of Conflict, a new work by Christos Hatzis for marimba and tape. Art of Time's highly acclaimed production I Send You This Cadmium Red returns from April 9 to 12, 2014. Under the direction of Daniel Brooks and the baton of Burashko, the production is at once a feast for and exploration of the senses, merging music, theatre and visual projections to kaleidoscopic effect. A staging of correspondence examining the nature of colour between art critic John Berger and filmmaker John Christie is performed by Julian Richings and John Fitzgerald Jay (reprising their original roles), against the music of Gavin Bryars played by the Ensemble with visual projections created by Bruce Alcock. This production was originally created in collaboration with Canadian Stage for its 2011/12 season.
Musical titan Branford Marsalis comes to the Art of Time stage from May 23 to 24, 2014 in Branford Marsalis & Andrew Burashko, offering a rare chance to see the three-time Grammy Award winning saxophonist in an intimate setting. Best known for his work leading the Branford Marsalis Quartet and stints with Sting and the Grateful Dead, Marsalis will play an evening of duets with Burashko on piano, in a not-to-be-missed pairing of these two prodigious musicians."I'm thrilled to collaborate and perform with Art of Time in Toronto," said Marsalis. "Andrew Buraskho's commitment to musical excellence echoes my own and I admire his tireless efforts to push the boundaries of classical music. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band will return to the stage as part of The Royal Conservatory's 2013/14 season at Koerner Hall for one night only on November 29, 2013. The Beatles's Sgt. Pepper album is re-imagined and re-invented through newly commissioned arrangements from pop, jazz, and classical composers led by Artistic Director and pianist Andrew Burashko, and featuring Canadian pop icons Steven Page (formerly of Barenaked Ladies), John Mann (Spirit of the West), Andy Maize (Skydiggers), and Craig Northey (The Odds).
