The 2016/17 Factory season looks beyond Canadian borders to navigate new identities and redefine the meaning of home, as citizens, residents, and visitors, in six plays charting new Canadian experiences.

"This year will be a truly multi-dimensional celebration of Canada, featuring world premieres that promise to be the classics of the future, captivating re-imaginings of the existing Canadian canon, and exciting presentations of work from across the country," explains Factory Artistic Director, Nina Lee Aquino. "Welcome to Canada. Welcome home."

The new season launches with a Factory Theatre and fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre co- production, the world premiere of acquiesce by David Yee, winner of the 2015 English-language Governor General's Award for Drama (carried away on the crest of a wave), and Artistic Director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company. The production is directed by Factory Theatre Artistic Director Nina Lee Aquino and it marks a milestone in the careers of both Nina and David, as they celebrate 15 years of their artistic 'marriage' as playwright and director; a relationship that has earned them much acclaim with such shows as carried away on the crest of a wave, lady in the red dress and paper SERIES.

Plagued by the success of his first book and haunted by his past, Sin Hwang arrives in Hong Kong with some unusual cargo and a lot of emotional baggage. Featuring a surreal cast of characters, from a foul-mouthed Paddington Bear to a wisecracking Buddhist monk, acquiesce is a sharply comedic and poignant tale of self, familial and spiritual discovery.

The cast features the Dora Award-nominated playwright and actor David Yee (Durango/fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company & Theatre Smash) as Sin Hwang; with award-winning actor, fight director, Sound Designer and producer Richard Lee (Romeo & Juliet/Shakespeare in the Ruff ); stage and screen actor John Ng (Ching Chong Chinaman/fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, Kim's Convenience/CBC TV), and breakout newcomer Rosie Simon (Cowboy Versus Samurai/Soulpepper).

The Enchanted Loom
Written by Suvendrini Lena | Directed by Marjorie Chan November 5 - 27, 2016

Cahoots Theatre Company marks their 30th anniversary with the world premiere of The Enchanted Loom, produced in association with Factory. The debut play by neurologist Suvendrini Lena is directed by Cahoots Artistic Director, award-winning multi-disciplinary theatre artist, Marjorie Chan.

The Sri Lankan civil war has left many scars on Thangan and his family, most noticeably the loss of his eldest son and crippling epileptic seizures brought on by his torture during the war. As the final days of the war play out; the family watches from Toronto, where a neurological procedure provides them with a chance to heal. This poetic play, part medical part mystical, is a harrowing tale of loss and hope that boldly exposes the joys and pain of unconditional love for family, and freedom.

The cast features award-winning actor, writer, and national speaker on diversity Kawa Ada (Salt- Water Moon/Factory, The Wanderers/Cahoots Theatre); Peter Bailey (A Raisin in the Sun/Black Theatre Workshop, Romeo and Juliet/Canadian Stage); Sam Kalilieh (Age of Arousal/Factory, Passion Play/Outside the March, Convergence Theatre & Sheep No Wool); Dora Award-winning artistic director of Aluna Theatre Beatriz Pizano (Blood Wedding/Modern Times Theatre & Aluna Theatre), Soprano Zorana Sadiq (The Sultans of the Street/Young People's Theatre, Airline Icarus/Soundstreams); and Asha Vijayasingham (Free Outgoing/Nightwood Theatre, The Washing Machine/Red Betty Theatre & Next Stage Theatre Festival).
