Angélique Kidjo Will Perform In Sydney On International Womens Day

West African Global pop sensation Angélique Kidjo will perform in Sydney on International Womens Day, 9pm on Friday 8 March 2019, at Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, the Australian premiere of her reinterpretation of the Talking Heads classic album Remain in Light.

She was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on 25 July 2002. Kidjo is a passionate advocate for girls' education. She is the founder of the Batonga Foundation, which supports both secondary school and higher education for girls in Africa.

Once in a Lifetime addresses people's basic right to live. Afrobeat horns and percussion are infused with lyrics which have new meanings. Born Under Punches is about corruption in society and how we don't invest in social development. Listening Wind looks at the after effects of slavery.

The three time Grammy winner, considered "the only African diva" by Time Magazine is an extraordinary performer whose breathtaking willingness to experiment as an artist & a musician combined with her striking voice & dynamic stage presence make for unmissable live concerts.

Upon relocating from Benin to Paris in 1983, Kidjo discovered popular music and Talking Heads' Remain in Light album, heavily influenced by the music of West Africa. Hearing it again years later sparked the idea of a full circle reimagining of the classic recording.

In 2017 Kidjo premiered a Remain in Light musical project at New York's Carnegie Hall and at Bonnaroo (David Byrne came out of the audience to sing with her during the Carnegie Hall show) Audiences could not get enough.

The cover version of the album, released in June 2018, was recorded with super producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Drake) with Kidjo's euphoric singing, she has redefined the work as a clarion call to contemplate issues and a true African rock album.
