A stage version THE BLACK SPIDER will play at the Basel Theater in Basel, Switzerland on September 22 and 25. The play is based on the novella of the same name by Jeremias Gotthelf, which was originally published in 1842.

From the Basel Theater website, "He [Gotthelf] observes the radical social changes of the time in great detail and depicts the poverty of the rural population with a directness reminiscent of naturalist literature."

THE BLACK SPIDER opens in a Swiss village, where preparations are being made for a christening at an old farmhouse. One guest notices a dark piece of wood, strategically built into the structure of the farmhouse. An elderly man, who has lived his whole life in the house, spins a tale that takes bone-chilling turn after turn. What began as a normal, Sunday morning soon turns into an eerie, horror filled story.

The cast includes Liliane Amuat, Urs Peter Halter, Steffen Höld, Martin Hug, Myriam Schröder, Cathrin Störmer, and Simon Zagermann, with live music and drums by Camille Émaille.

THE BLACK SPIDER is directed by Tilmann Köhler, with costume design by Susanne Uhl, set design by Karoly Risz, music by Jörg-Martin Wagner, lighting design by Roland Heid, and dramaturgy by Katrin Michaels.
