Theater Basel presents SOMEWHERE AT THE BEGINNING this fall as part of the Theater Festival Basel, from August 29 to September 9.
The 74-year-old Senegalese choreographer Germaine Acogny plunges into her family history and evokes in a tremendous solo the colonial past of Africa and Europe.
In SOMEWHERE AT THE BEGINNING, we meet her grandmother Aloopho, who held a powerful position in the village as an animist priestess, and meet the memories of Acogny's father, a functionary of the French colonial administration in Dakar. As with the West African Griots, who pass on traditional knowledge through dance and song, Acogny approaches the past and seeks its own identity. Poetic and intimate, director Mikaël Serre stages the icon of contemporary African dance - with intense video images that literally walk between the veils of history.
This production is performed in French with German and English surtitles.
