Bachelor of Science in Drama


The Drama Program at the College of Staten Island integrates the practice of theatre and performance with academic learning. Students graduating with the B.S. in Drama will have encountered a bold curriculum that encourages new thinking, imaginative and rigorous practice, and the study of historical and contemporary forms and genres. Courses include, among others, new models of collaboration in the contemporary global theatre, the literature of the theatre as it changes through adaptations in performance, cutting edge and feminist performance, the histories of theatre and performance, directing and design, movement and voice, technical theatre, and theatre and education. Students have the opportunity to create their own work in the Lab Theatre, as well as to participate in faculty directed and designed productions in the course of their study. Faculty expertise includes international and cutting edge scholarship, professional New York City based design, and training in directing, devised performance, acting, design, applied theatre and solo performance. The degree prepares students for graduate school or independent work as theatre artists, as well as for a variety of other careers by training students in collaboration, empathy, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.

52 Emerging NYC Artists Chosen For Inaugural “Open Call”

Performance Space New York announces First Mondays: Readings of New Works in Progress, organized by author Sarah Schulman (Maggie Terry, 2018; Conflict is not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility and the Duty of Repair, 2016). On the first Monday of most months between October 2018 and May 2019, the series will present audiences with an opportunity to gather and hear in-progress works from writers leading the literary avant-garde. First Mondays exemplifies the artistic community-building power in Performance Space New York's appointment of five Associate Artists. Today, the organization announces Sarah Schulman, Emily Johnson, Gillian Walsh, Sarah Ortmeyer, and Angela Dimayuga as the Associate Artists who will actively contribute to programming and administrative decision making in the years to come-honoring Performance Space New York's roots as a space run by the very people experimenting within it.

Staten Island Museum Marks A New Era At 2018 Gala

The Staten Island Museum hold its annual fundraiser on May 18, celebrating a new era in leadership and honorees that epitomize commitment to community. The honorees are Ralph Branca, Staten Island Museum's immediate past Board Chairman and CEO of Victory State Bank; historian, educator, and professional genealogist Debbie-Ann Paige; and Jee Ra, principal of the Korean School of Staten Island and program director of the Korean Community Development Center. Gala co-chairs are Kashif Pervez and Oswaldo Pena. This year's annual gala is the first under the leadership of recently appointed President and CEO Janice Monger, who began her tenure in September 2017.

Sylvia Kahan is Professor of Music at the Graduate Center and College of Staten Island, CUNY, where she is a member of both the Piano and Musicology faculties.  As a pianist, Dr. Kahan has performed as concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician in all of New York's major halls and in concert venues throughout North America and Europe.
