Trustus Theatre Presents MAHALIA, 2/11-3/5

By: Mar. 05, 2011

Mahalia Jackson was referred to as "The Queen of Gospel" by music listeners. Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world, and was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist. Entertainer Harry Belafonte called her "the single most powerful black woman in the United States".She recorded about 30 albums during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen gold records. Now, the incomparable Columbia actress Valdina Hall is taking the Trustus Main Stage as the gospel sensation in the biographical gospel-musical Mahalia. The show opens February 11 at 8:00pm on the Trustus Main Stage and runs through March 5, 2011.

When actress Valdina Hall brought the script for Mahalia to Trustus Theatre, she knew she had a unique evening of theatre to offer patrons in the Midlands. It followed the life of America's "Queen of Gospel" and offered multi-talented casting. Of course Hall wanted to play the role of Mahalia Jackson, but the script also called for two actors who could act, sing, and play their own instruments. This unique biographic show was happily put on the roster for the theatre's 26th Season with Hall in the titular role. "I was excited and a little intimidated," laughEd Hall. "I get to portray one of the greatest gospel singers of all time!"

Director Jocelyn Sanders, who is known for her successful productions of Crowns at Trustus and The 25th Anniversary Putnam County Spelling Bee at Workshop, was brought in to helm Mahalia. "What drew me to the script was the fact it was about a personality in history which happened to be very interesting to me," said Sanders. "Mahalia Jackson is one of those unsung heroes whom you don't hear much about. This script is but a glimpse into her life."

With a strong director and actress working on the project, all that was left was to cast the other two actors who would have to be able to be able to act, sing, and play their own instruments. Malik Squire and Chandra Sadler were cast, and the project was ready to prepare for its Trustus Main Stage debut. "The most rewarding thing about working on this show has been working with the cast," said Director Jocelyn Sanders. "Valdina Hall, Malik Squire, and Chandra Sadler, have made this a very easy, stress free rehearsal process.  We have fun with each other and we enjoy each other"

Actress Valdina Hall was introduced to Mahalia Jackson by her grandmother when she was growing up, and is excited to be portraying her in 2011. Hall knew she would have to delve into a lot of research in preparation to bring Mahalia to life on stage. "Fortunately there was a biographic show about her on TV that I recorded," said Hall. "It showed her performing and gave historical info on Mahalia." While watching the Queen of Gospel perform Hall was deeply moved. "Mahalia was a very inspiring person to watch and hear."

Hall admits that portraying a popular entertainer has its challenges and rewards. "Trying to get Mahalia's style and mannerisms, while still putting a little of myself in the character is careful work," said Hall. "But the reward is portraying her correctly...where someone can actually see the character within me. Everyone pretty much knows Mahalia Jackson. I just hope I do her justice in my performances." Undoubtedly with Valdina Hall's acclaimed history as an actress in Columbia, this will be one of her truest and most exciting performances to date.

As the curtain is about to rise on Mahalia, the cast and crew are certain that they have a crowd-pleaser on their hands. "This show will involve audience participation more so than any of the other musicals running around town this season," said Director Jocelyn Sanders.  "Trustus' audiences can expect to have a good time and feel free to participate in singing some of the songs as well as becoming a bit emotionally involved in the production.  This play strikes a very emotional nerve no matter whether it's a serious song or a lighthearted one."

Mahalia opens on the Trustus Main Stage Friday February 11th at 8:00pm and soulful gospel will flood the streets of the Vista as this remarkable show comes to the Midlands. The show runs through March 5th, 2011. All tickets are $25, and half-price student tickets are available 15 minutes prior to every curtain. With Trustus musicals selling out and long waiting lists accruing, patrons are encouraged to make their reservations soon.
