Interview: Jon Kilpatrick of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at Greenville's Warehouse Theatre

Are you filled with antici---

pation?

Well, you should be, because The Rocky Horror Show returns to Greenville, SC's Warehouse Theatre on August 31.

We asked star Jon Kilpatrick to tell us what we can expect from director Jenna Tamisiea's new incarnation of the audience pleasing favorite.

What's your history with Rocky Horror - the show and the movie?

This will be my fourth production of the Rocky Horror Show. And my third with The Warehouse Theatre. I honestly can't remember when I first saw the movie. I'm sure it was close to around the time I did my first production of the show.

Which character are you playing this time? How has your prior experiences shaped your interpretation?

I'm playing Riff Raff for this production. I've been a phantom, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and was Riff Raff for a couple performances in the last Warehouse production. I'd say the variety of experience provides a wealth of knowledge and a big bag of tricks to pull from to make each character unique.

How does this production differ from the others you've been in?

It is so unique! What makes RH special is its ability to mold to any form of interpretation and aesthetic and culture. Jenna has established a perfect homage to both the stage and the film with a colorful modern flare.

What's been the most entertaining part of the rehearsal process so far?

I think the immediate sense of community and chemistry amongst the cast. Each one is special in their personality and approach and interpretation to their character. It's been incredible watching all of our individuality come together to produce a cohesive story.

What is it about the show that's made it such a fixture?

I think the relate-ability to the bizarre. A raw human need for expression. We also are a race of need. Richard O'Brien crafts a story based out of the human race's need for expression, a need of acceptance, a need of (dare I say it) sex. It's fun. It's a party. But it also is truth.

Is there much audience interaction planned for this production?

Oh yes! Always! The audience IS a character in this show. They provide the feedback and the reaction to how the story plays out. If you attend the show, we expect you to participate! (Just remember, if you touch us, we reserve the right to touch you back.)
