Cape Town learners are set to get an enormous boost from this year's Artscape youth programme with return of the English and Dramatic Arts prescribed text, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH. The production will be directed by the playwright, South African theatre icon Dr John Kani, himself.

Endorsed by the Western Cape Education Department and supported by the HCI Foundation, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH forms part of the Artscape educational youth development programme that aims to promote social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts.

The high-quality production is aimed at Grade 11 and 12 English and Dramatic Arts learners from the greater Cape Town area, who will get the opportunity to experience the play which is taught as literature and a play study. The two-hour play will once again be presented as a full stage production that will also appeal to the general public. Says Marlene Le Roux, Chief Executive Officer for Artscape:

The purpose of the educational programme is to assist Grade 11 and 12 learners academically by presenting plays which are taught as literature on a theatre stage, therefore putting it in its intended setting. We will also be introducing learners to theatre and drama productions of a high quality, thereby building the audience of the future.

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH will play the Artscape Theatre

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH is a thought-provoking story about South Africa's recent past, dealing with the historical education of Apartheid, the struggle for freedom of our people, the issue of post-apartheid reconciliation and perceptions of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as an excuse that allowed people who were guilty of all sorts of crimes against humanity to be set free without paying the price. This is seen through one man's journey of coming to terms with the past by letting go of every bit of resentment and hatred harboured within him. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH stars Sizwe Msutu, Milisa Siswana and Tankiso Mamabolo.

Legendary playwright, actor and director Kani will present NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH alongside his latest play, MISSING. This marks his directing and acting debut at Artscape, a historical moment for the theatre centre. After every performance of NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, Kani will come onto the stage to engage with teachers and students to interactively debate about the text of the play.

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH will run at the Artscape Theatre Centre from 5 - 14 May, with performances taking place at 10:30 and 14:00. Bookings can be made through Computicket or by contacting Sedrico Husselman on 021 410 9927. Tickets cost R40.
