Lyric's new grand-scale coproduction of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece West Side Story opens tonight and features Broadway star Corey Cott as Tony and rising star Mikaela Bennett as Maria. Additional lead casting includes Brett Thiele (Riff),Amanda Castro (Anita), Manuel Stark Santos (Bernardo), and Adam Soniak (Action). San Francisco's acclaimed Merola Opera Program, one of the most prestigious and selective opera training programs in the world, offers audiences a look at the opera stars of tomorrow with a lively, fully-staged production of The Rake's Progress. Based loosely on the eponymous eight paintings and engravings by William Hogarth (1733-1735), Stravinsky's dramatic opera follows the decline and fall of a profligate heir who makes a devil's bargain with Nick Shadow, abandoning life in the country and his tender fiancee for the wicked temptations of London.The Rake's Progress will be performed 7:30pm, Thursday, August 2 and 2:00pm, Saturday, August 4 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. RESONANCE WORKS closes its fifth season with a fully staged production of Dvo?ak's opera Rusalka on Friday, May 11, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 13, at 3 p.m. Performances will be held at the Charity Randall Theatre in Oakland, continuing an exciting partnership with the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Theatre Arts. Presented with generous support from the Heinz Endowments, Rusalka will be performed with the Resonance Chamber Orchestra and sung in the original Czech with projected English supertitles. Resonance WorksFounder and Artistic Director Maria Sensi Sellner conducts.

The Glimmerglass Festival opened its new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! on Saturday, July 8, in Cooperstown, New York. According to B. A. Nilsson of Words and Music, 'It's a glorious, fully committed, high-kicking three hours of joy.' The production runs through August 22, 2017.
