STAGE TUBE: On This Day 6/6- Harvey Fierstein

Happy Birthday, Harvey Fierstein! In addition to Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles and A Catered Affair, Fierstein's Broadway acting credits include playing the mother, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2002), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later replaced Alfred Molina as Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Fierstein returned to the theatre when he toured as Tevye, replacing Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof starting in December 2009. On February 15, 2011, he replaced Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles playing opposite Christopher Sieber. He is nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for the book of Newsies.

NEWSIES is now in previews at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre. It will play a strictly limited 101 performance run following its critically-hailed run at Paper Mill Playhouse in fall 2011. DanceOn, the YouTube partnership channel exclusive to dance videos, released an inside look at the spectacular dancing in the world premiere of Newsies the Musical at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Cast members Jeremy Jordan, Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Evan Kasprzak of So You Think You Can Dance discuss Christopher Gattelli's athletic choreography and what it means to be in a cult classic. Plus hear from Christopher and Newsies director Jeff Calhoun about their triple threat cast. Newsises begins previews on September 15, 2011 and runs through October 16, 2011.

Newsies is inspired by the real life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,' when newsboy Kid Blink led the ragged orphans and runaways known as newsies on a two-week-long action against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, the musical is the tale of newsie Jack Kelly, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when Pulitzer and Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsies' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies his army of newsies to strike. Go behind teh scenes of the production with NEWSIES' own Andrew Keenan Bolger, as he goes inside the sitzprobe, the first time that the orchestra and actors come together. TV: NEWSIES Open Call in New York City!

Paper Mill Playhouse will open its 2011-2012 season with the premiere of a new Disney stage musical, Newsies. Featuring music by eight time Academy Award®-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, The Little Mermaid), lyrics by Jack Feldman and a new book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy), Newsies is adapted for the stage from the live-action Disney feature film musical. The production is being directed at Paper Mill by Tony® nominee Jeff Calhoun (The Will Rogers Follies, Grey Gardens). The show begins performances on Thursday, September 15. The official press opening is scheduled for Sunday, September 25. Recently, BroadwayWorld stopped by the Newsies open call in New York City and went inside the audition room.
