La Jolla Playhouse has announced full programming for the 2026 WOW Festival of immersive, interactive and site-inspired work, presented in partnership with UC San Diego. The WOW Festival will take place April 23 – 26 on the UC San Diego campus.

Particularly in light of the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is garnering new attention and appreciation for his astute analyses of race, class, and sexuality in U.S. culture. Our reading group will take up his groundbreaking semi-autobiographical first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953). Attendees are invited to read this seminal text that brought mid-20th Century African-American literature out of the shadow of Richard Wright while deftly exploring the post-Civil War Great Migration, its southern roots, its religious inflections, and its generational tensions. The suggested edition is the most recent paperback (ISBN 978-0345806543). Traditional New Orleans fare of coffee and beignets at Muriel's Jackson Square with lively discussion to follow led by Festival favorite and Southern literary scholar Gary Richards. Seating is limited to 50 persons; pre-registration is required.

Walnut Street Theatre's 2016-2017 Independence Studio on 3 season continues with The Irish Repertory Theatre of New York's adaptation Dylan Thomas' iconic, A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES. Directed by Aaron Cromie, the production began with previews on November 15th, opens tonight, November 17th, and continues through December 23rd.

Salman Rushdie's tale of love and vengeance becomes a powerful opera in this commissioned work at Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

From Pica Pica Press: First published in 1934, Petras Cvirka's merry tale Frank Kruk presents the story of an American immigrant from Lithuania, Pranas Krukelis, and his transformation into Frank Kruk, the proprietor of a Brooklyn funeral parlor. Although Cvirka had never been to America, his novel is remarkably perspicacious despite its minor accuracies, and many of the issues it touches on, including mortgage and insurance fraud, collusion, income inequality, and the pursuit of the almighty dollar, remain relevant yet today. Thirty years before Jessica Mitford, Cvirka's book raised a firestorm among Lithuanian-American undertakers, prompting Cvirka to write, 'Many undertakers completely misunderstand my good intentions. It seems I composed a kind of advertisement for them, the best I could. I praised the coffins, their business abilities, and described them as patriots, too.'

Theatre Raleigh announces the 2016 Hot Summer Nights Season including a return of the family favorite The Wolf (March 3-20). Next, Theatre Raleigh will premier an adapted story, The Mystery of Edwin Drood A Musical by Rupert Holmes- (May 11 - 22), followed by Arthur Miller's classic All My Sons (June 7 - 19) and The Light in the Piazza (July 6 - 14), presented in the gallery at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Finally, the Southern classic, Steel Magnolias (July 27 - August 7) and the story of the famed recording session Million Dollar Quartet (August 17 - 28) will round out the season.
