In 1938, at the age of 33, Austrian composer Eric Zeisl and his wife fled the Nazi invasion of his home in Vienna for a new life in the United States. When he arrived in Los Angeles, Zeisl committed himself to applying his mastery of classical compositional technique to commemorating the destroyed Jewish European heritage. Now, in celebration of the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony's 25th Anniversary, Albany Records has just released The Music of Eric Zeisl with the LAJS, conducted by Dr. Noreen Green.

Happy New Year Rochester theatre-goers! It is now officially 2019, and with it a new year full of wonderful theatrical productions of all varieties on stages large-and-small across the 585. We're fortunate to live in a city with some of the most diverse and eclectic arts organizations in New York State, so I thought I'd take a minute to highlight some of the productions I'm most excited about in 2019. A couple caveats: #1, the typical theatre season runs September(ish)-June(ish), and most theatre companies haven't announced their 2019-2020 seasons yet, so this article really only encompasses the first half of 2019; and #2, my theatrical tastes and interests aren't necessarily representative of the wider theatre-going community, so this list may not reflect Rochester's most anticipated or talked-about shows on the horizon (notice RBTL's upcoming run of Hamilton didn't make the cut, not for lack of worthiness). That being said, enjoy, and as always your thoughts and feedback are welcome!

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's bold vision - top global choreographers, distinctive groundbreaking repertoire, and virtuoso dancers - has fostered a jewel of a dance company in the American West.  Now, ASFB celebrates the fourth year of its residency at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) with a program of works that celebrates the company's commitment to creating new contemporary dance on Saturday, January 19 at 8:00pm. ASFB will perform Tuplet by Alexander Ekman, Dream Play by Fernando Melo, and 1st Flash from world-renowned Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most iconic and memorable shows in the musical theatre cannon, having originated on Broadway over 50 years ago and seen scores of revivals, and a feature length film, in the intervening years. The production currently playing at Rochester's Auditorium Theatre until December 16th is a rich and powerful experience, unlike any production of Fiddler you've ever seen before.

Like most auditions, the audition for the musical, "Gift of the Magi," at the Players' Ring in Portsmouth brought all manner of actors, some more talented and some less. But when producer and director Deborah Barry looked at the pool of players available to her, she realized she could put together a very special cast.

Based on the Academy Award winning film, Finding Neverland is the timeless story behind one of the world's most beloved characters - Peter Pan - and how he was born from the sheer power of J.M. Barrie's imagination.  With "pixie-dusted perfection" (Entertainment Weekly), Finding Neverland follows the playwright and his introduction to four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys' enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play-and his classic tale springs to life. 

The Actors' Gang announced today that the stage adaptation of Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dalton Trumbo's war novel, Johnny Got His Gun, written by Bradley Rand Smith and directed by Tim Robbins, will kick off The Actors' Gang 2018/19 Season from Saturday, October 6th to Saturday, November 10th, 2018. The press opening is Saturday, October 13.

Slow & Steady Records announces the release of SLUGish Ensemble's debut album, An Eight Out Of Nine. Seeking musical therapy as a relationship was coming to end, SLUGish leader Steven Lugerner revisited a selection of “go-to” nostalgic recordings by many of his favorite artists. “I started to make a list of songs that tugged at my heart, soul and ears,” writes Lugerner. “The collection of songs your hear on this album are all songs that have been deeply embedded in my musical ethos, play after play.”

Houston Ballet is back in full force to rehearse for the upcoming season and celebrate its triumphant return home to the Wortham Theater Center.

Pennsylvania Ballet and Artistic Director Angel Corella are proud to open the 2018-2019 season October 11-21 at the Academy of Music with the company premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo & Juliet, sponsored by PECO. Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) today announced additional details of its 2018-2019 season-the Orchestra's 44th-including its signature Chamber Music Series, Music in Color, and Free School Concerts celebrating the Jerome Robbins centenary. The previously announced 32nd-annual subscription series presented by Carnegie Hall opening on October 25 will mark the official start of Bernard Labadie's tenure as Principal Conductor of the Orchestra. The series will feature a season-long focus on Haydn, a specialty of both the conductor and the Orchestra.

George Bernard's Shaw's play is a sharp comedy that rides on a social commentary based on his beliefs that prostitution is not about moral failure but economic necessity. Awarding-winning director Eleanor Bishop ( Boys 2017) is both a writer and director creating feminist theatre. Bishop has deconstructed and re-framed Shaw's work adding an extra character in the form of Kitty Warren's sister Liz who provides a window from a of a sex worker's perspective.

The clash between a daughter's philanthropic idealism and her father's hard-headed capitalism is at the heart of George Bernard Shaw's witty and timely classic Major Barbara, which begins preview performances at The Armory on April 14, opens on April 20, and runs through May 13 on the U.S. Bank Main Stage.
