On a sweltering day late last month, I amble into the Casey's General Store convenience mart in Darlington, Wisconsin, population 2,316. I'm carrying a plastic bag of teabags in my back pocket, a need for hot water, and the hope of striking up conversation with the cashier. Darlington is the county seat of Lafayette County, one of several counties in Southwestern Wisconsin that hadn't supported a Republican for President since Ronald Reagan. That is until November 8, 2016, when folks turned out to support Republican nominee Donald Trump, helping to swing Wisconsin, and the election, in his favor. I'm updating my solo show The Real Americans, which is based on travels through small-town and rural America, so I'm curious to know why folks here went for Trump. The Real Americans is having a revival at The Marsh in San Francisco through October 28 before it opens a seven-week run at Mosaic Theater in Washington D.C. starting November 10.

On October 11, a world premiere drama based on untold true events in the life of Nina Simone will begin performances at TheatreSquared. Written by Brooklyn-based playwright Amy Evans, whose extensive one-on-one interviews with Simone's former bandmates supplied the storyline and inspiration for the play, The Champion is the story of one high-stakes night in a small-town diner in North Carolina. Al Schackman, Simone's bandleader and 40-year collaborator, will attend the official opening night performance on October 13 and join in on guitar for an intimate concert post-show performance with the actor Joy Jones, who portrays Simone. Slip into a 70s NYC Vibe at Ethyl's Alcohol & Food Ethyl's Alcohol & Food is a wild ride back into 1970s New York City that injects new life into an Upper East Side scene that was once the hottest part of town. Ethyl's was founded in May 2016 and is led by an eclectic team of rock stars who were there in the heyday of the disco, punk and rock 'n' roll scenes in NYC.
