The Jewish Museum's 2017 slate of lectures, discussions, and events continues in February with a lecture by guest curator Esther da Costa Meyer on Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design, and a concert by the low string quartet Bonjour. 

The National Philharmonic's 2016-2017 season at The Music Center at Strathmore continues on the Chinese New Year with Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Chinese gold medal pianist Haochen Zhang and Antonín Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 8 in G Major. Both will be led by Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski. Zhang and Gajewski are both former child prodigies. Since his gold medal win at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the 26-year-old pianist has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe and Asia, with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination and spectacular virtuosity. The double performance will be held Today, January 28 at 8 pm. and Sunday, January 29 at 3 pm in the Concert Hall. There will be an audience question and answer session with Zhang and Gajewski after each performance. Ticket prices are $23-$78 and are free for children age 7-17. The writings of Walter Benjamin, the influential German Jewish philosopher and cultural critic, are the basis for a contemporary art exhibition at the Jewish Museum from March 17 through August 6, 2017. The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin will examine themes in the author's magnum opus The Arcades Project via contemporary artworks, in media ranging from photography and video to sculpture and painting, and annotations by poet Kenneth Goldsmith.

 To ring in the New Year, on January 1 National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) will present 'Light Up The Night,' a concert of rediscovered and restored pre- and post-WWII music from the theatrical works of the great composers of the Golden Age of Yiddish Theater.  These include Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky and Secunda.  All are leading songwriters from the era of 'The Golden Bride,' which was presented by Folksbiene Theatre in 2015 and 2016.  The cast will feature performers who were acclaimed in that production, backed by a 16-piece orchestra.  The production is in Yiddish with projected supertitles.  The full concert will be offered twice, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place.

In May 2017, the first major New York exhibition in over 20 years focused on artist Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) will open at the Jewish Museum. Showcasing over 50 paintings and drawings in addition to costume and theater designs, photographs, and ephemera, the exhibition will offer a timely reconsideration of this influential American painter with a sharp satirical wit, placing her centrally in the modern dialogue of high and mass culture.

As previously announced, Roundabout Theatre Company will conclude its revival of The Cherry Orchard on Sunday, December 4, starring Diane Lane, Chuck Cooper, Tavi Gevinson, John Glover, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Harold Perrineau and Joel Grey.

The season opens this Today with back-to-back screenings of Tim Burton and Henry Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas, screening in Dolby Digital 3-D; Barry Levinson's heartfelt, autobiographical Avalon, chronicling generations of a Jewish family in Baltimore; and Hannah and Her Sisters, Woody Allen's funny yet philosophical family dramedy starring Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Dianne Wiest, and Michael Caine-with the last two films centered around Thanksgiving meals.
