BWW Reviews: Ramin Karimloo Sings Broadway to Bluegrass at Sterling's, Opening His Newest US Tour
by Don Grigware - Apr 22, 2013

On Sunday evening April 21 singer/actor Ramin Karimloo best known to UK audiences for his stellar performances as the Phantom in both The Phantom of the Opera and its sequel Love Never Dies, made his Los Angeles cabaret debut at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal in Broadway to Bluegrass. Since this concert was sold out from the onset, two more performances were added, Sunday matinee of the 21st and tonight, Monday evening April 22. With such growing popularity from his theatre work and recordings, it seems obvious that Karimloo will be a household name before too long in the US as well in Europe. Personable, warm and deeply grounded, the performer loves country music, rock and pop as well as Broadway and conceived Broadway to Bluegrass as a means of displaying all of his musical tastes. He also told me that a cabaret concert should have more to offer than just the songs from roles you've played. He wants his audience to get to know, not the Phantom or Valjean, but Ramin Karimloo.

As the starving, uneasy trio celebrates Passover with a makeshift Seder, bitter truths come out.

Leading young violinist Nigel Armstrong, the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition finalist who made his critically acclaimed Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) debut last season, returns to the Southland on Thursday, April 11, 2013, 7 pm, at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles, to headline an all-Bach violin recital for LACO's “Baroque Conversations,” a five-concert series that explores the genesis of orchestral repertoire from early Baroque schools through the pre-classical period. Hailed as “an astonishing talent, with exquisite technique,” Armstrong discusses and performs Bach's Partita No. 2 in D minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1004, a spiritual, emotional and technical tour de force considered among the greatest works ever written, and the Sonata No. 3 in C major for Solo Violin, BWV 1005. The solo recital marks Armstrong's return to his alma mater, The Colburn Conservatory, from which he graduated last year. He is currently in the Diploma program at Curtis Institute of Music.
