The traffic in midtown Manhattan was its usual horror at lunchtime last Friday--and Anna Netrebko was stuck in it. She was on the way to Cipriani 42nd Street, across from Grand Central Station, where the Metropolitan Opera Guild was celebrating the soprano at its 84th Annual Luncheon. Despite her delayed arrival, the soprano made some time to talk to me about her voice, her roles and what lies ahead--and, by the way, to be absolutely charming and laugh prodigiously in between her serious discussions about her voice and career.

The Daily Mail has reported that deals are currently being finalized for a BBC TV adaptation of Shakespeare's classic, King Lear, which will star Sir Anthony Hopkins in the title role. He will join a cast which also includes Emma Thompson as Goneril, Emily Watson as Regan and Florence Pugh as Cordelia, as his daughters.

Well, aside from a few standout performances, not much stuck. Adapted by Beth Flintoff, whose credits include Henry I of England and Oscar Wilde on Trial (Reading Between The Lines Theatre Company) and Greenham: 100 Years of War and Peace (Rosa Productions), this lively new version will be directed by Jonathan Humphreys whose credits include The Mighty Walzer (Manchester Royal Exchange) and Romeo and Juliet (Sheffield Crucible). THE RIVALS will run at The Watermill Theatre from 15 March to 21 April.
