I hardly know where to begin in describing the beautiful, world-class, but dramatically uneven production of the beloved and immortal 'The Sound of Music' that opened at the Civic Opera House over the weekend. All the resources of Lyric Opera of Chicago have been brought to bear on a brand-new production of a title that is known throughout the world, and the result is occasionally thrilling--a feast for the eyes, and usually one for the ears as well.

The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) announces Broadway and Cabaret legend Barbara Cook will appear at its annual Gala on Sat., May 31. Ms. Cook's highly anticipated performance will take place at 9 p.m. following an elegant dinner in the SOPAC Loft at 6 p.m., coupled with an online and live auction of unique and precious gifts and experiences. Families will join the celebration during the day with a Super-Hero workshop by Kidville at 10:30 a.m. and a free performance by fun and funky musician Bobby Beetcut at noon. Lyric Opera of Chicago announced its 2014-2015 season today, which is set to include eight operas, a world premiere new opera, a one night only piano concert with internationally acclaimed pianist Lang Lang, and special family performances.
