The Boston Philharmonic opens its 40th anniversary season - a season that also marks the 80th birthday of founder and conductor Benjamin Zander - on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University with works by Glinka, Dvo?ak, and Brahms. Dvo?ak's Cello Concerto will be performed by Cambridge born and locally trained soloist, Jonah Ellsworth. Mr. Ellsworth is familiar to Boston audiences for previous performances with the BPO and also for his work as a member of the acclaimed Boston Trio. He performed the Dvo?ak Cello Concerto under Zander's direction in Europe several years ago, a performance that was praised for its inwardness and emotional richness. The concert also includes Brahms's First Symphony - a specialty of Mr. Zander's - and Glinka's roof-raising Overture to his opera Ruslan and Lyudmila.

There's an irony about sitting in a theater on opening night reviewing a play about a play and the sometimes-tempestuous relationship between the players and the critics. But that's exactly what Terrence McNally's IT'S ONLY A PLAY is about, a group of theater people waiting for the reviews of their play after the opening night performance. Last week, the show opened at Theatre in the Park (TIP) in Raleigh to mixed reviews.
All the makings of a good show are there. The ensemble features some of the Triangle's most exceptional comedic performers including Ira David Wood IV, Brian Westbrook, Rob Jenkins, and Lynda Clark. In addition, the production is directed by the ever so talented Jesse R. Gephart. And the set is simply spectacular.
But not even this talented cast and crew can save McNally's script, which feels more like a diatribe than a farce. Yes, there are funny moments, but they are few and far between and more reliant on the physical comedy of the competent cast than McNally's pen.

It is with great excitement that the Irish Heritage Theatre announces our Fall 2018 production Lay Me Down Softly by Billy Roche. After a highly successful and critically acclaimed 'Women of Ireland' season last year featuring By the Bog of Cats (several critics' awards including third place overall in Best Actor (Female) category and our first Barrymore Recommended production) and The Women of Ireland, a risky choice of short classics (Riders to the Sea and Cathleen Ni Houlihan) mixed with a few absurdist contemporary Irish pieces directed by three female directors, we now turn to a season dedicated to The Irish Family. The phrase, 'You can't choose your family' springs to mind immediately.

Today, Marie decides to leave her husband: 'Let me tell you something. I find my husband so God damned irritating that I'm planning to leave him. And that's a fact.' But in Wallace Shawn's 1978 American masterpiece, facts are slippery things. In this radical re-imagining at JACK, two multi-disciplinary artists play the combative titular couple and head up the design team. Joined by an ensemble of some of Brooklyn's sharpest comedic voices, Gordon Landenberger (Bruce) and trans actress Theda Hammel (Marie) double as the set and sound designers, respectively, for this hilarious and timely new production.
