Ross Valley Players Presents DEATHTRAP, written by Ira Levin, which became an American thriller film in 1982. This ingeniously structured play offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients: gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter.

DocFest / New York DocFest (docfestjazz.org) will have its inaugural New York Benefit Concert (matinee), hosted by The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Featured performers include world renown drummer/composer Eric Harland with Aaron Parks, piano; Matt Brewer, bass; Walter Smith III, tenor sax and Mike Moreno, guitar.

Dvo?ak's Cello Concerto will be performed by Cambridge born and locally trained soloist, Jonah Ellsworth. Mr. Ellsworth is familiar to Boston audiences for previous performances with the BPO and also for his work as a member of the acclaimed Boston Trio. He performed the Dvo?ak Cello Concerto under Zander's direction in Europe several years ago, a performance that was praised for its inwardness and emotional richness. The concert also includes Brahms's First Symphony - a specialty of Mr. Zander's - and Glinka's roof-raising Overture to his opera Ruslan and Lyudmila.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra returns to Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage this season, led by Music Director and Conductor Andris Nelsons, for two concerts featuring notable soloists.

There's an irony about sitting in a theater on opening night reviewing a play about a play and the sometimes-tempestuous relationship between the players and the critics. But that's exactly what Terrence McNally's IT'S ONLY A PLAY is about, a group of theater people waiting for the reviews of their play after the opening night performance. Last week, the show opened at Theatre in the Park (TIP) in Raleigh to mixed reviews. All the makings of a good show are there. The ensemble features some of the Triangle's most exceptional comedic performers including Ira David Wood IV, Brian Westbrook, Rob Jenkins, and Lynda Clark. In addition, the production is directed by the ever so talented Jesse R. Gephart. And the set is simply spectacular. But not even this talented cast and crew can save McNally's script, which feels more like a diatribe than a farce.  Yes, there are funny moments, but they are few and far between and more reliant on the physical comedy of the competent cast than McNally's pen.

It was with great anticipation that I attended this concert.

But in Wallace Shawn's 1978 American masterpiece, facts are slippery things. In this radical re-imagining at JACK, two multi-disciplinary artists play the combative titular couple and head up the design team. Joined by an ensemble of some of Brooklyn's sharpest comedic voices, Gordon Landenberger (Bruce) and trans actress Theda Hammel (Marie) double as the set and sound designers, respectively, for this hilarious and timely new production. 

The Theatre Group at SBCC will start the season July 11-28, 2018 in the Garvin Theatre with the musical, GREASE.  Book, lyrics and music by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

Shakespeare & Company's Summer Training Institute kicks off this week. The four week program provides young actors, ages 18-25, the opportunity to immerse themselves in the actor/audience acting approach and pedagogy of the Company.  The Summer Training Institute is targeted for undergraduate theatre students, recent graduates, and early career acting professionals. This summer the program includes 45 participants from all over the United States, including the South, Midwest, New England and the West Coast.
