Having written extensively about skyrocketing-to-stardom singer Carole J. Bufford over the past three years (a January/February cover story for Cabaret Scenes Magazine, and rave reviews of her past three major show runs (here, here, and here), I felt as if I had exhausted my entire repertoire of descriptive metaphors and superlatives in assessing her stirring cabaret performances. Even though she's still but a babe in cabaret years, and has a long, successful career ahead of her, I wasn't planning to review any more of her shows because, well, there didn't seem to be anything more to say. But, dammit, every time I try to get out, Carole J. Bufford pulls me back in.

I never thought that writing a rave review would be more difficult than constructing a less than positive critique, but Carole J. Bufford, damn her, is causing me creative problems. That's because for the third time in three years I'm compelled to praise this attractive powerhouse cabaret singer to the skies (you can find my two previous essays on her unassailable talent here and here) and my author's arsenal contains only so many superlatives. With yet another outstanding performance last Thursday night at the Metropolitan Room, the young woman who was named BroadwayWorld.com's 2013 Cabaret Vocalist of the Year has snatched my mental thesaurus (not to mention my online one) and trampled all over it. She's given me the writer's block blues.

Smuin Ballet will kick off its 20th Anniversary Season in San Francisco this October with its XXtremesFall Program, featuring a lineup of stunning works that showcase the range and versatility of the lauded Smuin dancers. In XXtremes, Northern California audiences get their first look at Ji?i Kylian's acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to four heart-rending pieces for solo piano by Czech composer Leoš Jana?ek. Smuin also brings back by popular demand the enchanting ballet Dear Miss Cline, a buoyant and colorful romp set to the music of Patsy Cline by Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert, and Carmina Burana, one of Michael Smuin's most lauded works, set to Carl Orff's 1937 dramatic cantata of the same title. The XXtremes Fall Program plays October 4-12 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. WYNONNA JUDD is having quite a week. On Monday (3/18), she made her debut on the season premiere of ABC-TVs “Dancing With The Stars,” where she performed a cha-cha-cha with professional partner and last season's champion instructor Tony Dovolani. The same day, WYNONNA debuted “Something You Can't Live Without,” the first single off her forthcoming full-length album, produced by her husband/drummer Cactus Moser and set for release this year on Curb Records. The track became available digitally via iTunes and Amazon on Tuesday, March 19.

Starting February 8, as a command performance, the show will return for the eighth time -- and the final time for Gail Bliss. Chosen from over 600 hopefuls in 1994 to originate the role of Patsy in the initial touring production of "A Closer Walk," singer-songwriter Gail Bliss has made a name for herself all over North America for her work in this role. "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline" is estate approved - one of only two select productions to be sanctioned by the Patsy Cline Estate managed by Charlie Dick, Patsy Cline's husband. Dick said of Patsy, "she's the best I've ever seen."

Asolo Repertory Theatre announced the complete cast of its upcoming production of Bonnie & Clyde a thrilling new musical with book by Ivan Menchell (The Cemetery Club, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang); music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel); lyrics by Tony Award-winner Don Black (Sunset Boulevard, Song and Dance); Music Supervision, Arrangements and Orchestrations by John McDaniel; and direction and musical staging by Tony Award- winner Jeff Calhoun (Deaf West's Big River and Pippin, Grease!). After a long running string of musicals, Trustus Theatre is embarking on a new production of an old Trustus classic. Fans of the theatre since 1985 will remember Jane Chambers' Last Summer at Bluefish Cove as one of the hallmark productions of the first season, which was brought back by popular demand in 1986 and 1994.
