Over 300 performances of more than 50 different programs of theater, dance and music featuring local and world-renowned talent are on tap for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts' 2016/17 season, among them a production of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, helmed by SPRING AWAKENING director Michael Arden.

Recent IRNE Award-winner Sarah Gazdowicz directs LAURA with a steady hand, garnering especially strong performances from Alexander Cook as Detective Mark McPherson and Steven Barkhimer as Waldo Lydecker. Jasmine Rush coolly plays the title character, an attractive career woman whose portrait infatuates the detective investigating her murder.

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) hosts the 23rd Annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival from May 27 through July 17, 2016.

Theatre, as do all of the arts, represents the era from which it comes or is written about. For example, Lanford Wilson's TALLEY'S FOLLY places the spotlight on Missouri in 1944, the border state that, until this day, is noted for its laws and customs regarding prejudice against Jews, Catholics and Blacks (e.g. the Ferguson incidents). It also showcases many of the feelings of border Southerners regarding 'proper' etiquette, the sanctity of the roles that women are to play in society, and the power of gossip. All this is folded into a charming tale.

? Peninsula Players Theatre will present a reading of "Who Am I This Time? (& Other Conundrums of Love)" by Aaron Posner, adapted from stories by Kurt Vonnegut at Bjorklunden at 7590 Boynton Lane, Baileys Harbor at 7p.m., Monday, April 4.  Posner's charming comedy explores love, pure and complicated, by weaving short stories from Vonnegut's early masterpiece "Welcome to the Monkey House."   Join the Players reading of comedic love stories that explores, with warm hilarity, human foibles in a small town.  Admission is free.

The Eventide Theatre Company has made a bold choice in sharing Frank's story with a Cape Cod audience through means of a score depicting her feelings while fearfully secluded in the "Secret Annex," with certain lyrics molded from actual quotes made by the young prisoner. It is safe to say that Eventide has done a spectacular job bringing both the joy and pain of Frank's life to living color for those who would not otherwise have understood the trials she and her family faced in such a gruesome time in history.

Just in, multiple-time Tony and Drama Desk nominees Kate Baldwin, John Cariani, Marc Kudisch, Julia Murney, Mary Testa, Max von Essen, will be some of the performers at Transport Group's annual gala, 'Gimme a Break!' on March 7, 2016.

Transport Group, the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and OBIE Award-winning theatre company, has announced its annual gala Gimme a Break!, and will honor 5-Time Tony nominee Michael John LaChiusa and TheaterMania.com and its CEO Gretchen Shugart, on Monday, March 7, 2016 at the New York Times Center, 242 West 41st Street with the Transporting American Theatre Award for their significant contributions to the American Theatre. 

Nick Caldwell, one of the founding members of the legendary R&B group The Whispers who are best known for their #1 R&B hits “Rock Steady” (1987) and “And The Beat Goes On” (1980), has died as a result of heart failure. He was 71.

Sometimes it seems there is so much theater happening that it's difficult to keep track of it all. From personal experience, despite all the datebooks, smart phones, tablets, desktop computers and laptops...it's hard to keep everything straight in this wacky business of the show.

From the creative minds behind Cirque du Soleil's Corteo and Cirque Eloize's Rain comes La Verita - a dreamlike, acrobatic poem and surrealist circus extravaganza brought to life on Arts Centre Melbourne's State Theatre stage from 21 - 23 January 2016. The latest creation by internationally renowned writer and director Daniele Finzi Pasca, La Verita is a visually breathtaking circus work inspired by a backdrop created by surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

On the second night of this year's 26th Annual Cabaret Convention, Jeff Harnar and Andrea Marcovicci hosted A Sentimental Journey: World War II Songs, inspired by Marcovicci's memorable Oak Room at The Algonquin show, I'll Be Seeing You--Love Songs of World War II. (The CD is highly recommended.) As always with this pair's Convention contribution, the show was a treat in part because of its singular glamour. Much of our audience was exceptionally familiar with and nostalgic about these songs. A few had to be politely quieted for singing along, more than a few took each other's hands. It seems I've heard that song before . . . the co-hosts begin, warming the room.

Transport Group has announced that casting has been completed for its upcoming revival of Once Upon a Mattress, which stars Jackie Hoffman (On the Town, Difficult People, Hairspray) as Princess Winnifred and John "Lypsinka"Epperson (Lypsinka's The Boxed Set, The Passion of the Crawford) as Queen Aggravain.  The production, which is directed by five-time Drama Desk Award nominee Jack Cummings III, features Jessica Fontana (Cinderella) as Lady Larken, David Greenspan (The Patsy) as The King, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka (A Little Night Music) as The Minstrel, Cory Lingner(On the Town) as The Jester, Zak Resnick (Piece of My Heart) as Sir Harry, Jay Rogers (Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly) as The Wizard, and Jason SweetTooth Williams (Things to Ruin) as Prince Dauntless, with Vivienne Cleary, Richard Costa, Michael De Souza, Tim Dolan, Jack Donahue, Amy Griffin, Sarah Killough, Kristen Michelle, Ali Reed,and Doug Shapiro.

After piecing together the conclusions of archeologists and biblical scholars, and by applying his own understanding of human behavior, author Menachem Mannie Magid built an accurate picture of the personalities and events that transpired as the children of Israel became slaves. He says of his novel, 'The story is engraved in stones of ancient Egypt. And yet this story has never been told ... until now.'
