Immortalized by Euripides, the story of Medea has inspired numerous literary and musical works. Medea, the mythological sorceress and priestess of Hecate, murders her children when her husband, Jason, whom she had assisted in his successful quest for the Golden Fleece, repudiates her because he wishes to marry another woman. Traditional renditions of the story have portrayed Medea as a demonic figure, but Cherubini and his librettist, FranÁois-Benoit Hoffmann, while conveying the sheer horror of Medea's actions, bring out the humanity of a woman who is driven to unspeakable crimes by unbearable pain. In the France of 1797, the story of Medea could have easily been interpreted as an allegory of the Revolution who devours her own children. Cherubini's work is a brilliant synthesis of several types of opera: opťra comique, tragťdie lyrique, Gluck's operatic style, and the allegorical opera of the French Revolution. In this opera, Cherubini's mastery of harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration -- which often anticipates the orchestral sound of Beethoven -- truly comes to the fore. Cherubini's peerless handling of musical form and drama rewards the listener with an extraordinary operatic experience. Beethoven admired Cherubini above all his contemporaries, and Medea was not only a source of inspiration but a model as well for Fidelio.

BWW Review: NOT MEDEA: Motherhood Gone Awry
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 20, 2019

Playwright Allison Gregory combines myth and magic to craft a non-linear narrative about betrayal, death, motherhood, and the darkest tragedy. It is to her credit that she weaves a great deal of humor and humanity through the play, and Juliet Bowler is adept at playing both sides of the character. Toga-clad Gene Dante is cocksure in the dual roles of the mythological Jason (of Golden Fleece fame) and modern-day Jason, the woman's ex-husband who left her for a younger wife. Every Greek play must have its Chorus to contribute commentary, ably provided here in both spoken and sung verses by Cassandra Meyer. Elizabeth Yvette Ramirez directs with a clear-eyed vision of both the real world and allegorical components of the play, and elicits strong performances from her tight-knit ensemble. (more...)

BWW Review: Lebanese Import JOGGING at Kennedy Center
by Roger Catlin - Mar 15, 2019

In her one woman show, Hanane Hajj Ali quite noisily warms up, stretches and approximates her morning routine of jogging the streets of Beirut. The activity lets her mind run free as well. She thinks of roles she'd like to play. Medea, for example. And that brings to her a more immediate story of a woman and a tragedy further inland in Lebanon. (more...)

The Ghost Road Company is one of Los Angeles' premiere theatre ensembles dedicated to the creation of new work for the stage. The company is unique in its approach, having developed its own methods of collaborative development over many years. So when I heard they were reimagining the story of Oedipus, calling it JOCASTA: A MOTHERF**ING TRAGEDY conceived and directed by Brian Weir, I was intrigued to say the least. But after seeing the show, I am not quite sure how to write about it other than to say it was visually stunning to watch but confusing to the point of distraction. (more...)
