Porchlight Music Theatre and Artistic Director Michael Weber are proud to announce the final production in the fourth season of Chicago's hit "lost" musicals in staged concert series, Porchlight Revisits On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, music by Burton Lane, book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and based on the book Berkeley Square by John L. Balderston with direction by Lili-Anne Brown, musical direction by Andra Velis Simon and starring Sharriese Hamilton and Karl Hamilton. Porchlight Revisits On a Clear Day You Can See Forever is presented for three-nights-only Tuesday, May 9 through Thursday, May 11 at 7:15 p.m. and is performed on the set of Porchlight's Marry Me a Little (previews begin Friday, April 14) at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. Tickets are $35.  Orva Hoskinson, co-founder of San Francisco's Lamplighters Music Theatre, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017. He was 92. -Orva co-founded the Lamplighters with Ann Pool Mac Nab in the summer of 1952. From the beginning, their intention was to bring the Gilbert & Sullivan canon to audiences in productions of the very highest possible artistic professional caliber within the limitations imposed on what was at the time a small group of semi-professional and amateur performers drawn from the San Francisco Bay Area community. New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, America's preeminent professional Gilbert & Sullivan repertory company, announces its greatly anticipated new and exciting 2017-18 Season featuring a new jewel box production of The Sorcerer, celebrating is 140th anniversary this year; the much-loved H.M.S. Pinafore; and Ruddigore. The 43rd season launches Friday, September 15th (7:30pm) at Off-Broadway's intimate Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater (10 West 64th Street) with Gilbert & Sullivan's first full-length work, The Sorcerer (September 15-17). The season continues December 28 - 31 with the family-favorite H.M.S. Pinafore at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (East 68th Street between Park & Lexington Avenues), plus the annual New Year's Eve Gala scheduled for December 31 at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway). Thinking himself worldly and experienced, Don Alfonso decides to relieve his young friends, Ferrando and Gugliemo, of their faith in sexual fidelity. He challenges them to a bet, promising that within 24 hours their fiancees will prove unfaithful. Outraged, they accept, but find the challenge too painfully revealing and too difficult to withstand. Dressed in clown's clothes, these young men break their own hearts and the hearts of their fiancees. A comedy that is a tragedy underneath is the perfect stuff for the uncanny genius of Mozart, so clearly revealed in this dazzling score. (more...)

The typically implausible G&S style plot involves two companies going to extreme lengths to secure good reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe with rival productions. Many of the usual Gilbertian elements are included: an abandoned baby, a sense of duty, love across ranks and an implausible, contrived finale.
