The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Presents BEETHOVEN'S 9TH SYMPHONY, 3/21-23

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Edo de Waart open the 2014 Beethoven Festival with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on March 21-23, 2014 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. The program features the MSO Chorus, soprano Susanna Phillips, mezzo- soprano Kelley O'Connor, tenor Thomas Cooley, and baritone Christopher Maltman. The performances open with John Adams's The Wound-Dresser, a setting of Walt Whitman's Civil War prose.
Honorees Announced for Ninth Annual Opera News Awards

The editors of Opera News are pleased to announce the honorees for the ninth annual Opera News Awards, paying tribute to five superb artists who have made invaluable contributions to the art form: director Patrice Chéreau, tenor Juan Diego Flórez, mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, bass-baritone James Morris and soprano Nina Stemme. The Opera News Awards ceremonywill take place on Sunday, April 13 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. All the winners - and a host of the city's cultural, civic, and social luminaries - will be present at the gala awards dinner, which will feature celebrity presenters speaking about the awardees and introducing video performance clips.

Symphony Space's Gertrude Stein's Paris, a month-long, multi-disciplinary festival devoted to the vibrant cultural milieu of Gertrude Stein's Paris, continues tonight, April 27 with two fully staged productions devoted to the inspiration Stein's work had on vocal and operatic repertoire. Encompass New Opera Theatre will present two one-act operas based on texts by Stein, Virgil Thomson's Capital Capitals and Ned Rorem's Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters. Directed by Nancy Rhodes, this salute to Stein's work through American opera is a fresh examination of the influence Stein has had throughout the arts.

In Wien zählte Gaetano Donizettis Lucrezia Borgia einst zu den überaus beliebten Opern, ein Werk, das nach seiner hiesigen Erstaufführung im Jahr 1839 bis Ende des Jahrhunderts ein gängiges Wiener Repertoirestück war. Kein Wunder, bietet die Oper neben Donizettis meisterhafter Musik auch ein Sujet, das griffiger kaum sein kann. Schließlich ranken sich allein
um die historische Gestalt der Titelfigur und ihre prominente Adelsfamilie zahllose blutrünstige
Legenden; und auch im Plot der Oper, der auf Victor Hugo zurückgeht, finden sich Giftkelch,
Gruppenmord und vermeintliche Untreue. In konzertanter Form erklingt Lucrezia Borgia nun,
nach fast 120 Jahren Pause, wieder im Haus am Ring.
